First off, I love Duesseldorf-style altbier, and have been to the altbier breweris in Duesseldorf multiple times. Unfortunately, most of the altbiers made here in the USA -- and even the German versions exported here -- leave something to be desired. However, this one of the best USA-made altbiers I've tried. Still, not quite like the real stuff, but a very nice beer and definitely worth drinking.

On tap at Kinetic Brewing Company in Lancaster, CA.

Pours a clear golden-orange with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, and slight toast aromas. Taste is much the same with malt and grain flavors on the finish. There is a very mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty poor beer with super muted aromas and flavors.

On tap at Taps in Brea.

A: Dark copper with a finger of whiten foam.

S: Pronounced biscuit and toast with a little caramel. Lots of malt. Smells good.

T: Predominately biscuit, bread, and toast. Caramel is light, and there's a low earthy bitterness. Malt is the main attraction. The beer has a light malty sweetness.

M: Medium in body with lower high carbonation.

Overall: A fine Alt if you're in the mood for malt.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a dark amber to light brown. Head is off-white with good retention, solid lace.

S: Some light notes of caramel, crystal malt, hint of minerality.

T: Crystal malt and minerals, hint of carbonic acid. Light fruity characteristics, good flavours, but nothing I'd peg as an Alt blind.

M: Light-bodied, crisp biting carbonation again the carbonic acid gets in, fairly smooth.

D: Haven't had many brewpub alts, a rare style so I'm glad Taps is doing it. Ho hum, nice flavours, drinkable, but nothing more.

A: The pour is a light brown color with a thin layer of white foam.

S: The nose doesn't have too much going on. The caramel and toasted biscuit malt aromas are pretty much the extent of things.

T: The flavor was similarly one-dimensional. Mostly toasted and caramel malts with perhaps a touch of spicy hops. There really wasn't much to this beer, unfortunately.

M: The body is medium with a slightly creaminess to the feel on the tongue.

D: This is a rather bland and one-dimensional beer that just didn't do much for me. While it wasn't bad, it didn't make me want to go back for more.

This Alt poured a clear brown color with an egg-shell white head. Aroma was hard to pick up, but faint grainy malt. The taste was bready, and tasted like it has a bit of toasted malt maybe. Hops were not present as expected, but bitterness was low, and not a whole lot of caramel was picked up. Wasn't that interesting of a beer overall.

Appearance: Pours a clear reddish-orange color with a 2cm sandy colored head on top. Decent head retention on this beer and after a while it things to swrily islands on top of the beer.

Smell: Very little aroma on this beer. A light malty smell is all I can detect.

Taste: Sour, fruity malt flavor witha slight roast flavor in it. Pretty out of balance with just a light hop flavor. Not a real distinct bitterness nor are there true floral or earth characteristics in the hops.

Mouthfeel: Watery but clean on the palate. Very light bodied for the style.

Drinkability: I wouldn't go back for a pint of this beer. It's not horrid, but there are certainly better beers to consume.

One of the rotating offerings at Taps Fish House in Brea, CA. This altbier had a rich, reddish-brown color with a one-finger light tan head that fell to a small cap. Minor patchy lace deposits noted.
The smell was sweet; of caramel and toasted malt with a light floral hops aroma. The taste was decidedly on the sweet side with a strong toasted malt presence and caramel and just a hint of smokiness. As it reached the back of the palate, this brew had a pleasant, lingering hop finish. The feel was medium-bodied, modestly carbonated, and smooth.
This was a nice beer to go with dinner. It was also worthy of me filling one of my growlers with it (it was ½ price night on growlers). Taps Alt is a nice representation of the style and a damn tasty brew.
