On-tap at Taps (Brea)

A: The beer pours nearly black with a creamy tan head sitting on top.

S: Smells of coffee and coffee ground with a nice roasted malt base to it. Light sweetness in the form of toffee and molasses with some dark chocolate/cocoa powder in there as well. A mild ash note is detectable, unfortunately.

T: Really a solid flavor. Roasted malts and coffee are the primary flavor components. Plenty of dark chocolate with a subtle molasses, licorice, and toffee flavor. Light earthy hops and minimal bitterness.

M: Medium in body with a medium level of carbonation.

O: One of the better Taps beers I've had. Really easy to drink.

On tap at Taps in Brea.

A: Deep brown with crimson highlights. Creamy beige head with great retention.

S: Earthy coffee with roasted malt and a little chocolate. Biscuit and a low nuttiness.

T: Moderate roasted malt profile with a little coffee and chocolate. Lightly nutty with biscuit and earthy hops. Low bitterness.

M: Lower medium body with upper medium carbonation.

Overall: An impressive Schwarzbier.

On tap at Kinetic Brewing Company in Lancaster, CA.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of roasted malt, toasted malt, and slight cocoa aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and caramel flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a low level of carbonation with an almost flat mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but the mouthfeel is a bit off in my opinion.

On-tap at The Catch, on to the beer:

Black as the name suggest, with a bone white head and hues of orange at the bottom of the glass. It leaves some good streaks of white lacing on the glass. The nose brings to mind roasted coffee notes and mocha....yummy. It's almost stout-like in that aspect.

Taps Schwarzbier tastes good. Coffeeish flavors and mocha show a good amount of intensity for the style, nothing subdued or weak. There's a kick of spicy hops towards the end of the palate, and that note especially echoes on in the aftertaste. It's a little hoppier than your tradional schwarz, but don't confuse this with a hopbomb.

Sometimes crafting something traditonal works better than putting a twist on it. Taps continues to make good traditionally brewed beers.

Ordered a pitcher for the table. Dark dark brown so much so that clarity was impossible to determine. Poured with a tan head that persisted. Moderate roasted malt aroma and light malt notes too. No hop aroma. No fruity esters or diacetyl. Light malt flavor with an even lighter roasted malt flavor. Medium bitterness. Very smooth. Finished dry with hints of roast and malt sweetness on the palate. Medium-light body.

Very drinkable beer, and was a hit with the "light" beer drinkers in my party that night (some even asked where they can find commercial examples they can buy back in Texas).
