Draft pour into a shaker pint glass at Beachwood BBQ.

A: Clear, light golden color with two fingers of dense and persistent white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.

S: Faint pine and citrus, with some husky grain that reminds of crackers. Overall, the smell could have been more pronounced.

T: Begins off-dry with abundant grapefruit citrus and aromatic floral hop flavors, joined by weak toasted malt in the middle. The hop aromatics are pungent, and they linger on the palate, but they begin to turn astringent through the middle and into the moderately bitter finish. Surprisingly, some faint booziness is detected initially, when the glass is full, but fades over time.

M: Medium to thick viscosity, sticky and slightly syrupy, with almost no carbonation. While mouthfeel is easier to look past than some other sensory qualities, the failure encountered here must be noted.

D: This beer features powerful hop flavors that go some of the way toward mitigating its other flaws. That said, even in the presentation of these noteworthy flavors it comes across as heavy-handed. It is a wonder that the smell does not feature the aromatic qualities of this beer more proudly, but that is hardly the most onerous problem encountered here. The textural qualities clearly fall far afield from the style, even more so since it is referred to as an extra-pale ale.

I agree with the categorization of this as an American Pale rather than an IPA. It starts with citrus and pine on the nose, likely Cascade, in typical APA form. These flavors continue into the initial flavor and suggest aggressive hopping late in the boil. One of the keys to this beer is the malt body that helps to balance out the hop bitterness on the finish. A very solid beer in a cluttered style that nearly every brewery makes. This would also be a nice beer to have on cask but I have never been at Taps when they had it on.

Taps also has an amazing food menu and some good happy hour specials. Try any of the oyster offerings which pair well with the wide range of craft beer they have.

On tap at Tiger Tiger in San Diego. Poured a beautiful half-litre in a tall Imperial glass. Tremendous hoppy flavors in a light, sudsy beer.

Plenty hoppy with a crisp friendly taste. Some malty sweetness to start. A big flavor with lots of aromatics. Hops are resiny and perfumey. Bitterness seems well balanced with the malty biscuit flavors. Still, it's a thin and bitter beer, but totally drinkable.

Such a welcome change from endless IPA piney molotov cocktails. Full of hops, reeking of hops, a celebration of hops. This is a real winner from a brewery I hadn't tried before.

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a clear golden color with a 1 inch off white head that fades to a film on the top of the beer. A nonstop foamy curtain of lace forms on the glass on the drink down. Smell is fruity with some citrus zest and a distinct grape Tootsie Pop aroma. Taste is the same even with the Tootsie Pop flavor. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate after each sip. This beer is slightly flat with a low level of carbonation. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but the Tootsie Pop aroma and taste is somewhat odd.

Brea, CA

Clear golden yellow with a thin white head. Regular, consistent lacing down the glass.

Citrus and pine aromas combine with some bready malt.

Relatively hoppy for a pale ale--citrus and pine dominate with some sweetness and bread from the malt. Well balanced. Incredibly drinkable.

Medium to full mouthfeel for a pale ale, though also seems light and incredible drinkable. Great with food. A joy to drink.

A terrific, flavorful, and hoppy pale ale. A great staple beer--always available and always consistent at Taps. My favorite Taps offering (so far, anyways).

A: Pours a beautiful clear gold with a medium white head, leaving good lace.

S: Grass and grapefruit dominate, the Amarillo is in full force.

T: Citrus and piney hops dominate with a nice balance of flavour. Malt is in the background which is fine; I really enjoyed the pure taste of the hops here.

M: Medium-bodied, crisp, nice soft resiny aftertaste.

D: The best Taps beer I've had so far. The hop flavour are delicious and its lightness on the palate makes for an easy drinking brew.

On-tap at Taps

A: The pour is a clear golden yellow color with a frothy white head that leaves some fantastic lacing.

S: Quite a bit of citrus on the nose, mostly peels, but nice anyway. A very resinous and oily pine quality to the beer as well. Some sweet tropical fruits and malt to round things out.

T: The flavor opens up with a slightly sweet malt flavor and then is followed up by grapefruit and some citrus rind. There is a decent bitterness to the beer, but not as piney as I expected due to the nose.

M: The body is medium with a lively carbonation to it and a fair amount of bitterness.

D: A pretty decent pale ale. Some of the flavors become a bit harsh and tiresome after too long, but it's not a bad beer.
