Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
A refreshingly tart and crisp hefeweizen brewed with local MA wildflower honey, orange peel and coriander, and fermented with the juice from over 1,000 blood oranges. It’s a cloudy, yet effervescent beer, with lingering banana and citrus notes balanced against a healthy wheat backbone and hoppy finish from Mt. Hood and Crystal hops.

Poured from a bomber bottle into a belgian tulip. Served cool.

Pours a moderate off white head and a brownish orange body that is quite murky.

Strong belgian yeast smell. clove, medicine,

Taste is more complex. Certainly the yeasty front, faint juice flavor, wheat front as well. Some herb middle but the middle flavors are kind of weak. Honey aftertaste hits you about 5 seconds after you swallow. Neat.

Light to medium and steady but not heavy carbonation.

Funny almost belgian for a hefe. Elements of a hefe are there but the middle flavor profile is weak. Nice front and finish but alot to be desired in the middle.

I would drink again.

On tapat When Pigs Fly, served in a pilsner glass.

The beer was a hazy orange color with a thick white head. There was a moderate amount of lacing.

OK aroma of citrus and sweet malt.

More in the taste. Orange and lemon, maybe a little tropical fruit. Wheat.

Interesting mouthfeel, tart and on the acidic side. I liked it.

I enjoyed a pint of this from a freshly tapped keg at Howling Wolf Taqueria in Salem, MA.

A: A surprisingly bright orange-red glow lights up the traditional hefeweizen cloudiness.

S: The scent of orange zest/orange rind dominates. It could pass for an orange Kool-aid or VitaminWater in a blind test.

T: Almost as advertised. The blood-orange is rich and strong, imagine a traditional hefe cut half and half with smooth, pulpless orange juice (Sunny D perhaps?). This is still clearly beer though, sunnily wheaty beer with banana/clove notes readily present.

M: Smooth, a little on the thin side of medium. The alcohol is muted - would be easy to drink several of these over a long brunch or at a ball game.

O: This was an excellent surprise as I'm not often a huge fan of hefeweizens. The coloring makes it a very attractive conversation piece and the flavor is intensely positive. Pay attention to your pairings though. My only note of caution is to avoid consuming Happy Sol with any sweets, as the contrast will bring out some overwhelming sour notes that aren't present otherwise.

Review from notes.

A: Pours a hazy yellow/orange color with a small whitish head on top, about 3/4 inch tall. Retention is average, reducing to a thin layer on top of the beer. Thin lacing forms on most of the glass.

S: Very inviting with a nice orange aroma and some orange rind. Some wheat and spice mixed in as well.

T: A good bit of wheat and spice, as well as the blood oranges coming through nicely, though not as strong as i was hoping for. I don't say that to take anything away from the beer though.

M: Medium bodied with active carbonation, slightly tingly on the tongue.

O: Enjoyable. A Hefe that is heavier than most in terms of citrus presence, and I like it. Would get it again.

On tap at the Great Lost Bear. Significant orange aroma. Cloudy orange appearance, with a little head. Cider taste, orange juice added to a wheat beer.Yes o tangerine and these things but I'm not into beer cocktails. Very wheaty character, not a hefe. OK drinkability.Average mouthfeel.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pilsener- pours a hazy ruby orange color with less than a finger of head, good retention, and barely any lacing.

Smells wheat-y but not a robust scent.

Tastes like wheat of course, a little bit of tangerine with a nice mild finish (a little citrusy). Yeast present as well.

Mouthfeel is good- light body with medium carbonation. Not a beer I'd buy again and not the best wheat beer (I just had Weihenstephaner Hefe and this can't touch it).

Slightly hazy golden orage body with an inch of white head.

Smells heavily of wheat and coriander, with a touch of grain. I pick up a little of the orange, but only because I know it's there. I'm not sure I would have pinpointed that one unless I already knew it was in there.

Decent taste for a hefe. It's a bit grainy, but the wheat is good and there's a light citrus sweetness.

Mouthfeel is crisp and clean. The carbonation is just right. Body is light.

Overall, a fairly good hefe. I can appreciate that this would be a great summer outdoor bbq beer.
