Notes/Commercial Description:
Hopheads go to great extremes in their lupulin quests. It’s a worthy endeavor, but fraught with falling across the event horizon in a hoppy stupor. With swirling flavors from both dark malts and the crisp body from pilsner grains, our limited release black IPA will take you to the center of a hop explosion and back, without all the crushing gravity.

Naked Hopularity pours black into the glass with a small, creamy tan head on top. The foam leaves behind lines and spots of lace as it fades away.

The aroma is nutty and malty with notes of chocolate and coffee mixed in. Roasted malt and a touch of pine are also present.

Each sip of this medium bodied beer is soft on the palate, slightly watery with moderate carbonation. The flavor has a fair amount of chocolate, roast malt and coffee, plus a nice balance of piney hops at the end. Once gone the chocolate and pine lingers on the palate.

A very tasty beer that hides it's 8% abv very well. The flavors really come out as it warms.

A - pours a dark, midnight black with a dark white head, about half a fingers worth

S - the smell is full of coffee with small notes of chocolate underneath.

T - this black ipa tastes like a porter or a stout. Big coffee taste, very malty with a little hint of pine but not really much. Not really bitter. A roasty taste to the finish but smooth and very drinkable. Underlying notes of chocolate during the finish.

M - all malt aftertaste. nice smooth finish without much if any bitterness.

O - this isn't a bad beer at all. Very enjoyable and easy to drink. The label on the bottle says it'll take you to the center of a hop explosion but I don't get that at all. There's no hoppiness, barely any bitterness. This is all roasty malt. That doesn't make it a bad beer, by any means. It's very easy to drink, very enjoyable with a great taste to it. This is probably one of my favorites by Slumbrew. Really great beer but don't expect any hop explosion of any sort. Well done, well crafted and can't wait to have another.

Bomber from Pennington Circle Super Saver.

Perfectly blak body, no highlights. Four fingers of medium tan foam. Great stretchy lace.

Aroma is deep roasted coffee, with a whiff of chocolate.

Taste opens with a river of chocolate, and eventually yields some deep roasted coffee. Bitter bite at the swallow cuts through the chocolate. Pleasing hop tingle in the finish.

Smooth, slick, maybe even oily. Terrific mouthfeel.

To me, not a Black IPA, the hop bite is not that big, but a damn good stout. Ignore the label and enjoy the glass.

Naked Hopularity opens to what is partially a bright, citrusy, hoppy nose – lemon oil, grapefruits, and bits of pine dominating, with lesser notes of dandelion stem, mint, and eucalyptus – but is also much darker, the “black” part of “black IPA” consisting of bits of ash and tobacco floating in black coffee, with light touches of burnt toast crust adding more blackness. A decent array of sugars, including brown sugar, hints of molasses, and some fruit esters (fig, berry, peach) add balance, as do smatterings of rising wheat dough. As a whole, the beer features a wide-ranging nose, with bitter, sweet, doughy, and ashy notes existing in a nice balance, the main fault being a rather weak overall presence.

On the tongue, the first notes are a shock of grapefruit and pine, followed almost instantaneously by a huge wave of ash, tobacco, and coffee, these latter notes easily dominating the beer. For all of the 80 IBUs, which do bring grapefruit and pine, as well as light lemon oil and eucalyptus, it’s the ashy black notes which take up the majority of the flavor profile, appearing in surprising strength (given the nose) to scrape across the taste buds. Blackened toast crust and rising wheat dough add more texture, and the brown sugars and sweet fruit esters (berry, cherry, orange, apricot) add nice complexity, managing to mingle fairly well with the ash. The aftertaste is very heavily ashy, with a few sugars clinging on for dear life, and a bitter grapefruit and pine overtone lingering from the hops. Mouthfeel is medium, and carbonation is medium.

Overall, this is a very nice Black IPA, though obviously heavy emphasis on the “Black” part of that title. The ashy notes in here are stronger than many stouts, and while they do somewhat imbalance the beer because of their strength, they still work very well with the hop load, and the beer as a whole is highly drinkable (assuming, of course, you like ash).

No bottle date that I can find, however this just hit shelves and this is the first review, so I'd say it's quite fresh. Probably 2 weeks old or less.

A: Pours a very dark brown, almost black. Big, fluffy chocolate milk colored head. Head fades away very very slowly. Awesome head retention. Quite substantial fluffy swatches of lacing everywhere.

S: Big big pine notes. Some cocoa and char barely manages to sneak by the pine and introduce itself. A little bit of smoke in there too?

T: As expected, piney up front but not super strong or bitter. Roasted malt kicks in with some bitter chocolate and hints of char. Nice big wave of bitterness in the finish along with a quick resurgence of pine. Hints of bitter, drying pine and cocoa in the aftertaste. While not overly bitter, you can really feel the hop oils on your teeth (if that makes any sense). Kinda makes my teeth hurt. Or maybe I drank too much last weekend.

M: Medium bodied, smooth. A bit drying in the aftertaste as mentioned.

O: A nice black IPA from slumbrew. Not super hoppy like some, just a nice balance of roasted malt and pine. It kinda reminds me of Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet if I'm honest. Tasty and enjoyable.

Appearance: pours a black color with a 1/2" head that slowly falls. No lace develops.

Smell: pine and chocolate notes come through to the nose.

Taste: nice malty profile, as chocolate, prunes, grapefruit, and some pine tones create a nicely balanced beer. Alcohol is mildly noticeable and bitterness is moderate.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and a bit dry at the finish. Long lasting aftertaste as the chocolate and pine last a while on the tongue.

Overall: a nicely flavorful beer that is easy to consume. Mildly refreshing for the style, defintely worthy of a try if you see it.

Bomber poured into Kate snifter. Bottled 3-05-13 (20 days ago)

A- Pours very dark brown and sits black in the glass. There's a 1 finger head that stay around for a quite a while and has nice retention. No real lacing is left after the head goes away and has a somewhat lively body

S- More malty than hoppy. Big time roast and subtle smoke and caramel along with an earthy hop bite.

T- Follows the nose nicely. Tastes more like a hoppy porter compared to other Black IPAs which I never mind. The dark malts come out nicely with a solid roast from front to back. Bitterness comes out in the middle with some bitterness and citrus rind. Finish is roasty and bitter.

M- Medium to heavier feel with medium carbonation. Finish is pleasant and the body feels how I like a black IPA, to feel.

O- Nice balanced Black IPA. If your looking for a hop bomb this isnt it but if you want a nice and tasty, well rounded drink this is for you.
