Note: a session bitter made with some rye, smoked malt, and bramling cross hops.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint glass.

Pours a dark brown colour, with a pretty artificial looking white foamy head.

Smells dark and malty, quite rich too.

Tastes very very malty. I can taste that rye too, making it very smooth and drinkable. The hops add a nice fruity bitterness/sweetness.

Overall a great session beer, it was gone before I even noticed.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of March 2013, so it's just out of date. Acquired a while back from Trembling Madness in York. The label describes it as a session bitter brewed with rye, smoked malt and Pilot/Bramling Cross hops. Unusual.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A rich coppery-amber hue with very low carbonation. Yields a thin, frothy head of white foam that disappears almost immediately. Aroma of caramel malt with hints of grain, nuttiness, rye, earthy yeast, mild smoke and stewed leaves. Slightly sweet, with a nondescript fruitiness. Faintly musty.

Tastes of caramel malt with a dry, bitter finish. Notes of grain, rye, nuttiness, grass/hay, mildly floral hops, a hint of smoke, stewed leaves and earthy yeast. Well attenuated, with a lingering bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and dry, but thin, watery and completely flat. Disappointing. Somewhat astringent, with an aftertaste of grainy, smoky malt and bitter stewed hops.

Hmmm - flawed. I'm assuming it's just an issue with this bottle, but I'll review it as I find it. Lacklustre appearance and muted aroma/flavour. I was expecting more in the way of aromatic hop notes, so I suspect these have deteriorated. It doesn't seem oxidised, but the flavours don't jump out as I've come to anticipate from this brewery. The malty character comes over well though, especially in the taste. The mouthfeel is unimpressive - watery and flat. Perhaps the cap was loosened at some point? I hesistate to condemn this beer entirely, as other offerings from this brewery have been superb. However, this brew hasn't won me over. Caveat emptor....
