Served in a 5oz taster glass at Tighthead 3/16/13.

A: Served a bright orange body with creamsicle filling colored foam on top. Quite stick with good retention. Small amounts of lace left behind for good measure.

S: Awesome aromas of rich homemade caramels, vanilla icing, a bit of citrus-y hops for balance, and BOURBON. Exceedingly well balanced with the strong Bourbon aroma not overpowering the other players here.

T: Killer balance between the flavors noted in the aromas above. This should be overwhelmingly Bourbon-y, but somehow isn't. Excellent!

M: Slick and silky. The alcohol is there, but I struggled to detect heat or astringency.

O: Their 2nd BA beer and it seems like 200th. Unbelievably advanced in quality and depth.

Served in a snifter at WhirlyBall - Vernon Hills.

Sure, most people are probably here for the BCS tapping, but I came to try this little guy, their barleywine aged in Woodford Reserve barrels (if memory serves). It pours a clear orange-amber topped by a finger of cream-white foam. The nose comprises bourbon, grapefruit zest, buttery caramel, light oak, and a faint hint of green apple way in the background. The taste mirrors the smell, with the bourbon and grapefruit bitterly fighting it out for dominance. Again, a small bit of green apple appears in the background, a possible acetaldehyde sighting, but it doesn't affect me too negatively at all. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda drying finish. Overall, a very nice BBBW, as they say. I wasn't the biggest fan of the naked version, so this is a good omen for future barrel-aged offerings from these guys.

Pours a transparent copper/tangerine color with a modest head. Aroma smells heavily of booze and malt sweetness. The flavor on this bad boy is absolutely epic. The most meager of sips accosts the senses with massive, sweet malt and an oaky bourbon character to match. Either the sweetness or the booziness would be nearly overwhelming on its own, but in concert they balance each other perfectly for an incredibly bold and flavorful brew. The finish is just fantastic, as a vanilla-hued alcoholic warmth caresses the palate in a slow decrescendo. This beer makes me want buy a smoking jacket so I can wear it at hearth's edge as I slowly delve into its complexities, sip by sip. It is not for the faint of heart, but it is for anyone who appreciates bold, smooth, complex beer. I can offer no reasonable comparison within my current body of knowledge of craft beer.
