My first taste of this Minnesota brew.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

It pours a lovely dark amber with only a little foam. The center pour leaves only a single finger of head that quickly dissipates, leaving a little spotty lacing and a dusting on top of the beer.

The smell is quite nice, although a little weak to my nose. There is the sweet malt and a little yeasty bread note, a hint of vanilla, and a slight, underlying and rather pleasant funkiness.

The taste is wonderful and more than I expected from the smell. The malt is right up front with a roasted sweetness and some hints of caramel. I also caught some oak hits early on as well as some of that nice yeastiness that I really enjoy. Then the hops come forward, a little pine and a little peppery. It finishes with a nice lingering bitter note and a little boozy dryness.

Overall, a really nice beer. I'm looking forward to drinking this one again. I just noticed the bottle says "oak aged." That makes sense given some of the nice flavors in this. Good stuff.

750ml bottle

Pours a clear red color with two fingers of head that had good retention before settling to a thick cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left down th glass.

For a label that claims is malt forward, I smell mostly hops. Citrus, pine, and herbal. Then I get the caramel from the malt. Not getting much of the oak in the aroma.

Nice caramel and bready flavor. The hops add nice complimentary flavor of citrus and pine. Mild oakiness and vanilla notes. Bitterness is low but enough to make this a nicely balanced beer. Finishes with just a touch of alcohol.

Lucid nailed the carbonation in this beer. So smooth and softly textured. Just wish the body was a little fuller.

The oak could of come out some more. Otherwise a very solid red ale bringing some good flavor.

Appearance: It has a nice hazy copper/amber color to it. It has a nice thick tan head that dies down moderately and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet caramel, some toffee, light bready/toasty malts and faint herbal hops.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has caramel, toffee, some breadiness, toasty/buiscuity malts and light herbal hops.

Mouthfeel: It has a low-medium carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by decent flavors and aromas.

A: Thick, hazy dark bronzey-brown. My vision penetrates about halfway through the glass. Thick fluffy khaki head that recedes with little lacing to a patchy film.

S: True to imperial amber style - leather, wood (thanks probably to the oak aging), a hint of bourbon.

T: Cherries, wood, leather, classic amber fare. The oak barrel aging adds a nice dimension that I'm not terribly certain is all that common for ambers - are there many barrel aged ambers? I feel like Lucid took a smart risk and won big by barrel aging a beer that isn't a stout or barleywine. The resulting flavor dynamic is really unique, but very enjoyable.

I love it. You try it.
