Remarkable aroma coming off this one. One is hit in the face with maltiness, but an antiqued musk of something else that, after contemplation, could only be the oak barrel and perhaps a heavy dose of yeast. Not that this is unpleasant: it's refreshingly unique from many other beers and could easily become an acquired taste. The color is rich and beautiful but there's nothing stunning about how it sits in the mouth. It's very tasty, if one is looking for an unfamiliar and perhaps challenging taste.

Poured from a 12 oz brown bottle into a clear glass snfiter. No evident or decipherable packaging date. Received as part of craftbeerclub.com shipment courtesy of little sis Tami.

A: Burnished amber with 1/2-finger beige foamy head with good retention and tons of lace spots and streamers.

S: Big tannic oaky aroma blends with dark crystal malts and light sourness with tangy, herbal, earthy hopping which is moderately strong. No big yeast esters, maybe some mild dark fruitness, or alcohol character.

T: The flavor profile is also pretty earthy and woody with very prominent tannic oakiness which couples pretty well with the dark crystal malt caramel and maltiness. Earthy hops are a good accent. There are some fruity yeast esters but the alcohol is well-hidden. Mild-to-moderate bitterness. Flavor is pretty cohesive but kind of lands with a thud.

M: Medium-bodied with low carbonation and sticky tannic aftertaste and feel.

O: Duce is not a bad beer, but I'll admit not really up my alley with a little bit of sour woodiness and earthy nature overall. Oak lovers will really like this brew.

Lucid Duce pours to a dark copper hue with a nice, creamy, yet solid head of foam that lasts a while and leaves good lacing. The nose on this beer is one of bread, light spice, and vanilla, and it’s quite enticing.

This beer has a flavor that follows its nose, but it’s more intense. Flavors of bread and biscuits are most evident, but there are other great flavors to savor as well, such as caramel, some woodiness, a touch of pine, and a dash of cherries and citrus. The beer has a certain whiskey component to it, too, due to the aging in oak barrels. There is just a touch of alcohol in the finish, but it gets out of the way quickly, allowing you to savor the other complex flavors.

Duce is the first beer I have sampled from Lucid Brewing and I like what I have experienced so far. They really seem to have balanced out the flavors in this beer and I love the complexity and oak aging. This beer is definitely one I will try again when I can and I can’t wait to try more from this brewery. Cheers!

Appearance: Cloudy brown-amber, huge head.

Smell: Tannic, citrus hop. Not very strong.

Taste: Toffee, wood tannins, earthy. A little bit of citrus in the finish. Definitely can taste the oak.

Overall: This is an interesting beer to try for a different take on wood aging. I'm not a amber ale guy since they usually are kind of boring toffee/earthy flavors. The wood in this case gives it a couple extra dimensions to perk up the interest level.

My first taste of this Minnesota brew.
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

It pours a lovely dark amber with only a little foam. The center pour leaves only a single finger of head that quickly dissipates, leaving a little spotty lacing and a dusting on top of the beer.

The smell is quite nice, although a little weak to my nose. There is the sweet malt and a little yeasty bread note, a hint of vanilla, and a slight, underlying and rather pleasant funkiness.

The taste is wonderful and more than I expected from the smell. The malt is right up front with a roasted sweetness and some hints of caramel. I also caught some oak hits early on as well as some of that nice yeastiness that I really enjoy. Then the hops come forward, a little pine and a little peppery. It finishes with a nice lingering bitter note and a little boozy dryness.

Overall, a really nice beer. I'm looking forward to drinking this one again. I just noticed the bottle says "oak aged." That makes sense given some of the nice flavors in this. Good stuff.

A: Thick, hazy dark bronzey-brown. My vision penetrates about halfway through the glass. Thick fluffy khaki head that recedes with little lacing to a patchy film.

S: True to imperial amber style - leather, wood (thanks probably to the oak aging), a hint of bourbon.

T: Cherries, wood, leather, classic amber fare. The oak barrel aging adds a nice dimension that I'm not terribly certain is all that common for ambers - are there many barrel aged ambers? I feel like Lucid took a smart risk and won big by barrel aging a beer that isn't a stout or barleywine. The resulting flavor dynamic is really unique, but very enjoyable.

I love it. You try it.
