Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.
Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy copper amber orange with a lot of rising bubbles. Solid two fingers of off white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing on the glass.
Smell: A sharp and juicy hop forward aroma with nice bitter hints of citrus and earthy hops. Bold and ripe upfront scent of hops with floral, earthy, and grassy hints. Scent of dank pine resin. Citrus fruit hints of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, tangerine, apricot, pineapple, and lemon zest. Background presence of pale malt with hints of grains, cracker, caramel, and yeast. Slight hints of honey like sweetness. Very hop forward. A pretty solid aroma.
Taste: As good as the aroma hints at, a ripe and juicy hop forward taste with big notes of citrus and earthy grass. Floral and herbal hop notes with a spicy taste of pine resin. Grassy hop notes. Big juicy citrus presence with notes of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, apricot, pineapple, tangerine, and lemon. Subtle bready pale malt backing with some notes of cracker, grains, sweet caramel, and yeast. The hops dominate with a nice bitterness. A very good juicy taste.
Mouthfeel: Body is on the higher end of medium. Carbonation is moderate. Very juicy and oily. Bitter and drying. Alcohol is masked fairly well by the big hops.
Overall: A pretty solid imperial IPA. Good in your face earthy and citrus hops.

I had a pint of this at the recent Lucid hosted AHA rally. I'll be the first one to admit that I didn't take good notes on this one since I was socializing and having a great time, but thought I would still give my impressions here for completeness.
Aroma: Powerful citrus and some tropical fruit aroma wafting off of this. I could actually smell it before it was handed to me! Some sweetness from malt present as well (once I got it closer to my nose.)
Appearance: Deep gold to nearly orange in color with excellent clarity. Head was off white, and faded fairly fast.
Flavor: As expected from the aroma, I got strong citrus (orange and a hint of lemon) in the initial flavor. I got a fair amount of sweet after the hop punch. As with many of the Lucid beers I found the finish to be somewhat astringent and difficult to get over.
Overall: A good double IPA but not one of my favorites. The astringent end ruins it for me, but this is still a strong beer from Lucid. I'd like to try it again under more controlled circumstances and see if my thoughts vary.

I lived in Michigan and had the pleasure of having first dibs on Hopslam. Now I live about 2 miles from Surly, so I am no stranger to a good IPA (or Double IPA.) Lucid Duo has a very west coast taste and is on par with Surly Wet. Very hoppy. In fact, it tastes nearly identical to Wet for a fraction of the price. Excellent bang for your buck. 9% ABV, 4 pack runs about 12 bucks. Can't go wrong with this one.
At my local store this stuff is right next to the Surly, and deserves its place there on the top shelf in the cooler. This is not a beer you would want to have warm.
