Burnt orange in body with a bubbly white head. Sharp aroma of grass, detergent, mild vanilla. Tastes of citrus with rind, grassy notes, some mint, bitterness in the center. Medium carbonation in a slightly chewy body. There's a sense of something artificial in the flavoring but I can't quite figure out why.

Growler filled at Yorktown Beverage, Yorktown, NY

Pours darker amber, heavily hazed, moderate tan head, leaves a full collar, and nice looking super fine lacing, scattered fine mini sheets, webbed and spotty.

Sniff reveals a moderate grainy hop package and a nice malty/bready under carriage.

Palate mimics the nose, with more notes of grainy but smooth hops and again sweet malty underpinnings. Nicely balanced pale ale, easy drinking, flavorful and quite enjoyable. I believe this is the first Bronx Brewery beer I’ve tried and I like it. Good stuff that’s well worth a try. Well crafted, every day kinda brew.

From Empire State Cellars in Tanger (Riverhead); notes are from 5/29

A clear amber brew is topped by a cap of foam just less than one finger in height. It retains itself well, leaving heavy spotting as the beer drops down the glass.
Nicely balanced, this beer eases a floral, citrusy and resinous bitterness with caramel and dough. Lots of fruitiness comes out, too. Graininess is a bit strong.
Hops are somewhat earthier in the flavor, with citrus and pine secondary. Biscuit and dough, toffee, and caramel make up the malt backbone while dark fruits notes from the yeast come in as strongly as in the aroma.
The body is medium, surprisingly close to full, and pretty smooth. There may be a carbonation issue, though, as it goes pretty flat. There's little crispness at all, really.

Right from the can..
Slight hint of hop and citrus, but at 50 IBU I was not expecting a real hoppy one.... This was very refreshing, clean and crsip.
A nice solid mouthful and a clean aftertaste

Easily a summer beer or a brew just sitting around after a game

A- Three finger frothy head, pale white in color... Retains well.. Body is dark amber with crystal clarity.

S- rye and spicy piney hops, sweet malt is beneath... Get some floral notes... Kind of a light fruitiness too.

T- Sweet caramel, biscuits and bread hit first... Floral hops arrive mid-palate then lingering caramel on the aftertaste. A very malt heavy IPA but I like it.

M- Thick, creamy, malty and sweet. Only bitter at the finish and it's mellow but lingering.

This is not your hopped up beast of an APA. It does offer some bitterness and the flavors of floral and piney hops, but it also offers a tasty array of malt flavors that I enjoy.

A- reddish orange... Very dark for a pale ale
S-very sweet yeasty malty ness
T- just like the smell, this is not a hop forward pale ale. Very malty sweetness with some yeast invests
M - stickiness for the finish

O- interesting for a pale ale. Malt and breads yeast run the show

I came across this beer and just had to try it. I knew by looking at the can that it was contract brewed in La Crosse, WI (probably by Steven's Point) but I couldn't pass it up. It seems so gimmicky!

Appearance: Mainly clear, very deep amber that borders on becoming a mahogany brown in color. Short, and short-lived, off-white head. Impeccable lacing though! It leaves almost solid sheets of lace as it goes.

Aroma: Spicy, floral, citrusy and grassy hops atop a dark caramel malt base. There's some yeasty fruitiness working with the hops as well... berry, pear, and crisp apple.

Flavor: Surprisingly full maltiness that displays its caramel character nicely. Yeasty fruitiness runs through it, and the spicy, grassy, and gently floral hops are well-infused as well. It's remarkably well-balanced in one way, but with an edgy bite that's part alcohol (it's 6.3%) and part hop. Despite that aggressive rasp, it then softens and becomes just delicately spicy, and then sweetly floral and dully fruity in the finish. Is that how the Bronx is, full of character upfront and a bit harsh, but really just sweet and flowery on the inside? Hmmmm? It lingers nicely in the finish, steadily revealing each of its components again, one at a time, and finally settling into grassy, gently spicy, and mildly leafy with an undertone of medium caramel.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a brisk carbonation that settles as you progress through the glass to become more smooth and just gently bristling.

Overall: Surprisingly good with more than just a bit of complexity. It's really quite English in nature, but there's an American hop side of citrus to it as well.

Had a pint at the NY Beer Co near Times Square. It's a classic American pale ale with clear East Coast roots. The hops and bitterness are rounded and gentle with a lightly earthy citrus kick. Doughy, toasty barley rolls underneath, for a smooth pale ale. The flavors here aren't huge or crisp, but it's a clean crowd pleaser of a beer.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a nonic tumbler- pours a clear amber color with two fingers of beige head, good retention and lacing. The reason i gave this a lower score is because it looks more like an IPA than a pale. I like em really pale (and hoppy).

Smell is nice- the pleasant citrus and floral aromas of cascade are inviting. A slight biscuity malt presence but only a hint. Lovely.

Taste is very nice as well- crisp but also smooth. Bitterness up front and throughout; grainy up front but smoothes out into a nice caramel flavor to back up the zesty hops. Not quite as exciting of a hop experience as I would like though.

Mouthfeel is also nice- medium body, moderately carbonated, very little resiny feeling. This is definitely a good pale ale and an exceptional beer by NY standards (I'm used to the Boston standard which is pretty much all around exceptional with a few duds). I've had this several times but this is the first time out of the can- I may buy it more often cause it's fresh (I live a few miles or less from the Bronx brewery). However, Captain Lawrence Sun Block will more likely be my local go to in the warmer months to come. Cheers!

A nice burnished copper. Good thick head, even better lacing as my glass was artfully decorated all the way down. Smell is full of toasted grains and yeasty bread with malt complexity. Bready malt. A healthy fruitiness combines with a caramel sweetness and faint almost phantom like alcohol edge. Hops are at he same time earthy and grapefruit tinged citrus. Taste is superbly balanced and quite delicious. Biscuity malt gives way to a smooth sweet caramel and a crisp hop bitterness. Grapefruit and hop oil blossom in a clean dry finish that leaves a trace of hop oil and light biscuit. Just a touch of fusel alcohol that is easy to miss when the beer is warmer is the only clue to the slightly elevated abv. Feel is smooth and gently carbonated. Supple in the mouth, medium weight. Wonderfully drinkable and quite solid as a beer. One heck of a cornerstone to build a brewery on. Nice job BxB!

Poured from a tall can into a pint glass.

Pours medium dark amber with a good thick lid of white foam. Sticks round. Mild malty nose, fruity. Taste is a light bitter malt. Very mild english pale taste. Bitter is tasty throughout. Easy drinking pale. Good option.

Another beer courtesy of the legendary woodychandler. This guy is amazing. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a caramel color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is light, a bit of hops. Taste is well balanced, some bitterness, a touch mild, very drinkable. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a solid beer.

16oz can. pours a dark clear amber with a medium beige head. Aroma is sweet caramel malt, fruity with some floral hops notes. Taste is sweet caramel malt, yeast, fruity mild citrus flavors. A medium body with moderate carbonation on the palate. Finish is sweet caramel malt, yeast, fruity mild hops bitterness. This brew seems to lean towards the sweet malty side with little hops. Overall an ok drinking brew.

I had at the Kent Ale House in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

A. A deep, cloudy caramel-red color. Opaque. Nice thick, foamy white head that leaves a good deal of lacing behind.

S. Extremely sweet, malty scent.

T/M. Sweet and floral. A strong caramel malt flavor. Some banana and celery taste underneath. A hair dry; medium bodied. A bit of a tart aftertaste.

O. Solid flavor. Refreshing. Nice balanced blend.

Cask at d.b.a., Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is slightly hazy copper in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with delicate lacing on the surface that gradually faded away.
S: There are aromas of floral and citrusy hops in the nose along with notes of caramel and biscuit malts.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and quite complex; however, there are stronger flavors of biscuit, caramel, and nutty malts and only hints of citrusy and floral hops. A very light amount of bitterness is present.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth on the palate with some hints of chewiness and no carbonation.
O: The beer is very easy to drink and is very flavorful when compared to other beers in the style.

On draft at Rattle n Hum, NYC.

Poured a murky deep copper hue with a one finger foamy white cap. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured a light citrus hop and subtle caramel.

The taste consisted of a moderate piney and light citric hop atop a grainy caramel malt.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a good serviceable APA. Fresh and tasty.

Straight pour from a 16oz can to my DFH IPA glass; there’s some numbering on the underside of the can, which I suppose is a canning date (“0873 2237”); assuming it’s based on a Julian code, that’d mean this was packaged on March 28, so about two months old. It’d be nice to get a fresher can, but it’s brand-spanking new in my area and can-conditioned so hopefully a little age hasn’t affected this too much.

Appearance (3.5): Close to three fingers of custard-colored head rises off of the pour, capping a slightly chill-hazed body that’s a deep honey color with reddish tones. Very modest retention: the head doesn’t stick around forever, and it leaves just a few patches of lace, but nothing much.

Smell (3.75): Really nice blend of some light caramel, toffee, and toasted Italian bread malt tones mixed with some orangey, floral, oily hops aromas. Not sure what combination of malt, yeast, and hops it is, but there’s also some nice stone fruit aromas: peach, apricot, plum. Very nice mix, with surprisingly well-structured malt tones.

Taste (4.0): Following the nose, it’s definitely malt-driven, with forward but not heavy toffee and caramel tones, underscored by toasted Italian bread (kinda like croutons) and a modest but clear citus zest bitterness toward the finish. There are some lemony hop tones, like unsweetened lemonade, along with some of that thick stone fruit sweetness, like just a bit of peach nectar was mixed into the wort. The hop character is, above all, very floral and lovely, which is a nice surprise.

Mouthfeel (4.5): This has a very nice feel, with a smooth, medium-weight, slightly oily body with soft, filling foam and a nice, moderate prickle. Very satisfying, with a lot of character but not too heavy.

Overall (3.75): This is a nice beer, and very tasty—its well-structured malt character and kind of gentle, floral hop character makes it almost like an American take on the English Pale Ale. It’s nice. It’s not the hop-bomb APA you might expect these days from the style, but this is a really well put-together beer that should be a nice cross-over for just about anyone with good taste to appreciate.

Had it 8/9/12 on tap at Taproom 307 in NYC; pours hazy copper color with a creamy tan 1 finger head that faded slowly and left great lacing and rings as it went down.

Smells of sweet malt, grains, citrus hops, lemon zest, caramel and light floral hops; a nice rich nose for a pale ale that's very potent and enjoyable.

Tastes of sweet malt, grains, citrus hops, lemon zest, grapefruit, biscuit, caramel, wheat bread and light floral hops; very tasty for a pale ale and quite easy to drink.

Not the hoppiest APA, but a definite session beer that was crisp and refreshing, with a medium body, average carbonation, and it went down very easy. Overall feel and experience was good, it’s a quality new beer.

Had this beer at NYC Beer company in the city. Served in a pint glass cool.

Pours a hazy brown, topaz body and a light tan creamy head. Smells of pine, citrus and nuts.

Barnyard smell. Forest, pine and burnt nuts. Medium to light mouthfeel. Okay and varied flavor. Interesting. for the style that usually isn't earth shattering.

I would prefer not to fill out the numerical grades since this is an ambivalent review. Got a four pack of the pint cans, and they have distinctly over-pronounced malt character with some faint, ghostly hops and a bit of an unfamiliar alcohol on the nose. But the cans aren't spoiled per se, I suspect they're just old.

I've had the tap version fresh and it's really a superior beer. So, like so many hoppy pale ales and IPAs this brew is really done a disservice in their distribution. Caveat.

A: Pours a clear deep copper in color with minimal amounts of visible carbonation and some dark amber highlights. The beer has a three finger tall dense foamy light tan head that slowly reduces to a mottled thick film covering the entire surface of the beer with a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of biscuit and caramel malts with moderate aromas of floral and citrus/grapefruit/orange hops.

T: Upfront there are moderate flavors of biscuit and caramel malts with some light amounts of sweetness. That is followed by light to moderate flavors of floral and citrus/grapefruit/orange hops that contribute a moderate amount of bitterness which slowly fades.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth with a light to moderate amount of chewiness.

O: This beer has a lot of intensity to the flavor for an APA - I really enjoy it. I found this beer to be easy to drink and a nice offering that I would definitely have again.

Appearance: deep amber color. pretty good clarity and a two finger white head that fades slowly and leaves behind a slight lacing

Smell: lots of crystal malts. definite caramel and tends towards some dark fruits. some hop aroma mainly citrus and pine.

Taste: opens with some crystal sweetness, mostly caramel but some darker fruits, backend has lighter hop tastes, floral, citrus and pine.

Mouthfeel: light and over sweet.

Overall: has some hop aroma but more of a crystal malt forward beer. too much sweetness. not necessarily bad tasting but pretty far from what I look for in this style

I was up in Brooklyn this past weekend to attend Day 1 of Mugs Ale House's Belgium 2 Brooklyn 8 event and Alex Hall recommended that I hit Breukelyn Bier Merchants before I headed for home. What a coup! I found all kinds of CANs in their cooler, including this one and so The CANQuest (TM) rolls along merrily.

From the CAN: "The Bronx Brewery [-] Our Bourough, Your Beer"; "This deep amber, Ameri[CAN] pale ale is brewed with five different barley malts, generous additions of Cascade and Centennial hops, and a unique strain of yeast. The British, German and Ameri[CAN] malts used provide a blend of caramel, biscuit, and nutty malt flavors. The hops provide a gentle, pleasant bitterness with an intense floral and citrus aroma."; "OG 1.064, FG 1.016, SRM 10, IBU 50".

The Crack not only garnered me a little spritz across the fingers, but there was also some foaming going on, leading me to employ a more gentle Glug than usual. Once I got it started, it seemed to calm down, so I became more aggro, but still not inverted. This all resulted in just over a finger of dense, tawny head with good retention. Color was a deep, coppery amber (SRM = 10, apparently) with NE-quality clarity. Nose had an orange citrus quality, underlain by a caramel sweetness. Once more, I thought of the Brach's caramels that my maternal grandmother would put out when we came to visit. Mouthfeel was medium and I just kind of let it sit on my tongue initially, to warm up. The interplay of the malts and hops was interesting, but it was difficult to pull one flavor out from another. I could get the caramel and the nuttiness, as well as a citrusy bitterness, but beyond that, it was kind of a melange of flavors. Great lacing began to form as I drank my way through the glass, into which I had deCANted it. Finish was semi-dry, with the malt balancing the hops, which may not have been as gentle and pleasant otherwise. It was a servicable APA, but it would not supplant SNPA for me any time soon.

Malty up front with a little hops on the back end. Reminds me more of an English ale, but not bad. Easily quaffable.
