From Empire State Cellars in Tanger (Riverhead); notes are from 5/29

A clear amber brew is topped by a cap of foam just less than one finger in height. It retains itself well, leaving heavy spotting as the beer drops down the glass.
Nicely balanced, this beer eases a floral, citrusy and resinous bitterness with caramel and dough. Lots of fruitiness comes out, too. Graininess is a bit strong.
Hops are somewhat earthier in the flavor, with citrus and pine secondary. Biscuit and dough, toffee, and caramel make up the malt backbone while dark fruits notes from the yeast come in as strongly as in the aroma.
The body is medium, surprisingly close to full, and pretty smooth. There may be a carbonation issue, though, as it goes pretty flat. There's little crispness at all, really.

Appearance: deep amber color. pretty good clarity and a two finger white head that fades slowly and leaves behind a slight lacing

Smell: lots of crystal malts. definite caramel and tends towards some dark fruits. some hop aroma mainly citrus and pine.

Taste: opens with some crystal sweetness, mostly caramel but some darker fruits, backend has lighter hop tastes, floral, citrus and pine.

Mouthfeel: light and over sweet.

Overall: has some hop aroma but more of a crystal malt forward beer. too much sweetness. not necessarily bad tasting but pretty far from what I look for in this style

A- Three finger frothy head, pale white in color... Retains well.. Body is dark amber with crystal clarity.

S- rye and spicy piney hops, sweet malt is beneath... Get some floral notes... Kind of a light fruitiness too.

T- Sweet caramel, biscuits and bread hit first... Floral hops arrive mid-palate then lingering caramel on the aftertaste. A very malt heavy IPA but I like it.

M- Thick, creamy, malty and sweet. Only bitter at the finish and it's mellow but lingering.

This is not your hopped up beast of an APA. It does offer some bitterness and the flavors of floral and piney hops, but it also offers a tasty array of malt flavors that I enjoy.

This one came as a bit of a surprise to me when I saw it at DM's as we don't often get cheap American ales in a can, and at $12 a 4/pack this is indeed as cheap as it gets here in Australia. If this actually turns out to be a decent Pale Ale, well I think we might have a new fridge filler to go with Little Creatures Pale Ale, Stone & Wood Pacific Ale and the mighty Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen!

Poured from a 473ml US pint can into a nonic pint.

A: This pale ale has a textbook clear amber body with a boisterous foamy white 2cm head that reduces to a fairly sticky lace around the glass.

S: Those classic American Pale Ale pine/citric hops are right upfront in the aroma. This is followed by fairly a distant toasted biscuit malt base, along with a hint of caramel sweetness. One thing that is noticeable is how fresh the hops smell in this brew, reminiscent of a decent hop picking season ale.

T: Surprisingly well-balanced flavours at play here; the malt base is a broad sweet biscuit/caramel foundation that is just at that range right before it cloys, likewise the hops are plentiful and bitter with expected citrus/pine flavour but they don't completely dominate the flavour like they can in many other APA's. There are hints of malt nuttiness rounding it all out as well.

M: Mid to light bodied, may be borderline watery, with a light ale-friendly carbonation.

D: A damn good brew, and very little to fault it - the only thing that really stood out was the borderline watery mouthfeel, the rest of this brew was well solid. There is one other thing that stood out to me and that is the marketing - this can, whether it was trying to or not, makes the beer look cheap (which it is) but it is actually a very good, though nothing stands out about it, craft beer. If someone at my local DM hadn't put a "recommends" label I would have completely breezed past this but instead I saw the label and thought "Tom, what the hell does Tom know about beer?" and bought it based on that label. Think about representing your decent crafted ale better Bronx.

Food match: For a well-balanced pale ale like this it would be best suited with almost anything; Thai, Indian, BBQ, steak and chips, hamburger, etc... i.e. I couldn't think of anything specific, this beer is generically that good!
