A remarkably intricate South Bronx take on a Belgian Classic.

European malts and candi sugar provide a backdrop for three distinct strains of yeast in a complex BPA with a range of subtle flavors – like bubble gum, tangerines, smoky cloves and bananas.

A: The beer is very hazy light yellow in color—too hazy to see if there is any visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high bright white head that gradually died down, leaving a lacy patch of bubbles on the surface, a narrow collar around the edge, and a webbing of bubbles running down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of spices and Belgian yeast are present in the nose along with hints of tangerines.
T: The taste follows the smell, having flavors of Belgian yeast and clove-like spices along with notes of citrusy tangerine hops, which become stronger as the beer warms up. There are also underlying hints of candi sugar.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The flavors of tangerine and candi sugar lend complexity to this beer and in some aspects make it seem a bit like a Belgian IPA and a tripel.

Fresh 12 once can, 3 weeks old. Hazy gold/orange color. Smell is banana, peppery, cloves, spices, yeast. Taste is banana and cloves, yeasty, coriander, pear, apples. Mouthfeel is light with good carb. Finishes dry. Not bitter on the finish. Overall it's not too bad. I'd call this a poor mans Don De Dieu. Not as dry or complex, and without the heavier burn from the alcohol. This is a good sipper. Not bad. Average at most for a Belgian Pale but very drinkable. Would buy again.

Poured out of a 12 oz can, purchased at the brewery a couple of weeks ago.

Look - hazy golden with a one finger head. Some carbonation but settles quickly.
Smell - bananas, spices (cloves?), honey, and even a little bubble gum (as the can suggests).
Taste - the taste is fairly complex. the initial taste is dominated by the bitterness of the hops, which dissipates quickly. The Belgian yeast flavor then comes through, delivering that very distinctive taste. finishes with good wheat flavor and a bit of lingering bitterness. Oddly enough, it tastes really similar to an iced oolong tea with honey.
Feel - light to medium body, medium carbonation. tastes like a beer for its ABV.
Overall - there are simple and complex BPAs. This one leans on the more complex side, though not to the point where it's overwhelming. One of my favorite beers from this brewery.

The Bronx Brewery "Belgian Style Pale Ale"
12 fl. oz. can, no apparent freshness dating
$2.29 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Hmmm, a little kick of foam cam out the top of the can when opened - unusual... decent carb, but not over-carbed, so OK, probably a good sign. Hazy golden body beneath a fluffy head of white. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma expresses bready, slightly toasty, and grassy malts (clearly pilsner malt) with cloves and black pepper (I'm assuming yeast, but it might be actual spice). The flavor brings in a pleasant note of sweetness, just a dollop of sugar, that then suggests vanilla (or does it, is there actual vanilla?) and with the clove it expresses bubblegum. Some apple backed by a mild citrusy note. Some chalky mineral. Some leafiness and subtle earthiness with a hint of dried pine needles. The spiciness balances the sugary note, and in combination with a moderate bitterness, and it finishes peppery and dry. It's hard to fault it in any way, but at the same time there's something missing that keeps it from becoming great. I wish I could put my finger on that and explain it. It's almost like it's just a basic, put the pieces together Belgian pale, and yet there's a very nice character to the malt, and I guess the yeast, although I think i may have hit on it... the balance between sweet and dry/peppery is great but there's a bit of fruitiness missing. On the other hand, I've had beers like this and found them to be fine, or even great, so maybe that's not it. Ugh, I have to throw my hands up, I'm not sure what's seemingly missing to me - but what it is in the end is a decent Belgian pale, and at a very good price.

It tastes absolutely delicious, the spiciness of the Belgian yeast and the fresh hop aromas combining to create something that could have come straight out of Tired Hands. Spectacular. No idea how fresh this can was but I bet it was no more than just a few days or weeks old.

From the can it pours a hazy straw color; a fast pour yielded a big foam head. This soon subsides into a rocky cap and thin collar that leaves some lacing.
Green grape, white wine, cracker and honey malt aroma, as well as light spices and a hint of lemony tartness. Hints of hay and light banana rounds things off.
A graham cracker and honey malt sweetness coats the tongue. Soon, an earthy, leafy and slightly spicy palate adds complexity and dryness. Smooth and gently carbonated. Easy to drink.
Perhaps the doesn't reach the standards of great Belgian Pale Ales, but it's still pretty good.

A: Poured from the can into a Piraat tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is slightly hazy golden-orange with a half-finger head of white.

S: Funky fruity esters - think ripe apples - and a bit of earthy spice (rye comes to mind more than once).

T: Grainy malt bill sets the foundation, but it's followed by fruitiness - ripe apple, apple skins and a touch of citrus. Some sugary sweetness is there too - candied sugar and/or even brown sugar. Finishes with a bit of alcohol warmth and spice, as well as a decent amount of American citrusy hops.

M: Good creamy carbonation, body is light-to-medium in heft. Finishes pretty clean.

O: Good stuff; impressed with this one, as it comes across as an authentic Belgian-style Pale Ale with some American touches.
