Experienced on tap at Twenty Tap in Indianapolis, 11/3/2012.
The beautiful black pour with a minimal amount of foamy head is an instant piece of promise for the beverage.
Since I had never heard of this beer before entering Twenty Tap yesterday, I could only assume from its name that it was a Black version of Triton Brewery's most trusty beer, the Rail Splitter IPA. Turns out, that is exactly what I got.
The smell of Midnight Rail has all of the familiar notes of Rail Splitter, namely the fresh hops and hints of grapefruit, but with it being a little more dense and dark it also doesn't smack the senses initially like Splitter.
The first taste immediately reminded me of the terrific Rail Splitter in every way, and it isn't until the mouthfeel and aftertaste that it begins to take a different turn.
Overall, it is a good beer that I would probably try again, but it has a bit more unpleasant aftertaste than that of Rail Splitter...which would make me almost always opt for the trusty mainstay.
