Sample from the brewery.

Black, opaque with a light brown lacing on top that lasts. Soft hop resin blankets the nose, soft dankness and a sweet charred maltiness in there too. Very smooth, chewy body and a snappy carbonation. Semi-pungent hop character throughout, ample bitterness in tow. Hefty amount of charred malt flavor in the middle, hint of dark fruit and brown malt stays on the palate. Hoppy semi-roasted finish.

Exceptional, spot on to style and very drinkable for its size. Hoping I run into this one again soon. (527 characters)

In tap at Arvads served in tulip. 2" spongey tan head that left early lacing.
Scent of roasted coffee, dank
Superb taste, coffee, cocoa with a mild carb that
helped this creamy mouthed, yet a little slick, blackest
of ales drinkable and delicious. This beer seemed to have a lot of porter
profiles, but the hops were present, but not in your face. A superbly drinkable hop coffee malt beverage. Actually complex with subtle flavors on the front, big profile with the feel and lingering notes. Brilliant. (503 characters)

Awesome to see more and more Alchemist brews on-tap around Waterbury. Miss the pub but the Black Back seems to always have me covered. Reviewed from the notebook (01/24).

A- Poured from the taps to a large, oversized Hill Farmstead snifter with a black, not quite RIS thick, body. Creamy, light mocha head to a finger with pretty good retention. Falls to a frothy ring and leaves a nice blanket of lace at the top that turns to drizzle halfway down the glass.

S- I had no idea what kind of brew this was going into this. Hops made me aware right away that this was a Black IPA, just about pungent hops on par with most good IPAs. Citrus, pine and earthy with a dusting of cocoa powder roasted malts right there with them, brings some good strength.

T- Hops seem to build even stronger here. Juicy mango and grapefruit citrus go back and forth in front of floral, pine and earthy hints. Roasty, nutty and chocolate malts form a base that blends with the hops seamlessly.

MF- Moderately thick bodied with a creamy texture overall. Carbonation comes in at a medium level letting those hops really pop on the palate. Hop and cocoa bitterness lingers in the finish.

Bright hops above a solid roast, chocolate malt base. The hops are just as fresh and clean as many other great IPAs I can think of. I would order this one again, for sure. (1,337 characters)
