Poured from a growler, ok sorry... I took a vacation to Vermont not only for beer, also for the foliage and Ben and Jerry's and just to get away. Anyway, I had planned my vaca MONTHS in advance and the day I arrive, they announce a new Growler system and growler fills. Was almost like winning the lottery for an Ohio guy.
Then a week after we got back, they announce the store front shut down. Anyway...

I thought this was a rather solid specialty. HUGE hop presence, easy to drink and just fresh. I cant compare it to anything else. Just every sip you wanted more and more. Almost had a bit of a addictive effect. Was truly a treat and would love to see it mass produced one day~

Served from 64 oz stainless steel growler.

A: A dark, dark red color poured with a minimal head.

S: Smell of lots of hops with citrusy notes.

T: The hoppy smell follows through to a very hoppy citrusy taste.

M: The active carbonation gives this hoppy beer a very nice profile.

O: Overall a very solid beer that I was lucky enough to try.

So glad to finally see this!!

A: Hazy and brown, with a medium off-white head that fades quickly.

S: Pine-herbal-citrus hops up front but not too strong, then whiffs of dark malt with a faint roast note in the background.

T: Like it smells. A moderate American hop flavor blends with dark malts. Perfect balance. Hints of plums and grapes, then a little roast flavor at the end.

M: Medium carbonation and medium-light body. A nice dry finish after all that sweet malt, with a walnut skin note that I associate with dark Munich malts. Super flavorful and extremely drinkable.

O: This beer covers just about all the bases flavor-wise without being overwhelming in any way; love the way it lingers on the tongue. Donovan's was an Irish red for the first year or so but then got a little darker and hoppier each year, and was more of an American brown ale by 2011. The 2013 edition is maybe better than my last one at the old pub.

64oz stainless steel Alchemist growler into Treehouse tulip. Thanks Don (DonFrap) for sharing this.

A- Pours a murky reddish brown, a fairly slight white head forms that dissipates fairly fast. Not the most appealing looking beer, but appearances don't mean everything.

S- Caramel red malts with a nice piney slightly earthy hop balance. Fairly hoppy for a red ale, very nice balance, about average aroma strength.

T- Restrained but decently bitter piney hops, a tiny bit of orange juice, caramel, finishes with a red malt backbone. Again fairly hoppy for a red ale, a little bit on the bitter side, very well balanced.

M- Very drinkable, smooth, a little bit juicy bordering a tiny bit on the watery side.

O- Donovan's was a very crushable red ale that didn't disappoint. Not my favorite style, but this is definitely one of the better representations that is fairly on the hoppy side. I could easily crush a couple pints of this, I hope in the future (albeit the probably distant future) they can can this along with Heady Topper.

Brand new beer from John Kimmich (last seen over two years ago at the pub).
The brewer himself filled this growler on the morning of release.
Poured into a snifter glass. It pours an amber dark woody color with minimal head and solid lacing.
Smell is wheaty, bready, malts.
Taste is delicious, good hop flavor in balance with the malts. Delicious.
Finishes very crisp and refreshing.
This beer is enjoyable, clean, tasty with perfect malt/hop balance. Sessionable.
So great to have John getting these beers out again.

A-Pours crimson with a light colored head. Beer laces well. Pretty transparent. The color is pretty cool to look at.

S-Was expecting more of a hop punch here but I am enjoying the sweetness. Smells like this is going to be more of a malty brew. Bread and caramel.

T-Mostly sweet with a little hops in the middle. Herbal quality to the flavor. Mostly like the nose. This is not an extremely hoppy beer but there is a bunch of flavor.

M-Carbonation is mellow and the body is fairly light. Clean and quite crisp as well.

O/D-I liked it but it is inferior to many of the other Alchemist brews I have tried. Happy to grab a glass, but one is good for me. Flavorful but I was looking for a bit more hops. I love hoppy Red/Amber ales. This one was a bit more tilted to the other side of the spectrum.

The locals combines 1/3 donovan's red with 2/3 heady topper to make a "redhead"

Dark red with a nice head. Very good lacing.

Smells pretty sweet - very clean malt scent.

Taste is very malty. I'm getting caramel and a hint of hops. Very powerful for 5.16 ABV

Nice feel of balance between the malt and the hops

Great session ale. I haven't found a beer I've been disappointed with yet from this brewery. Solid stuff.

On tap at the brewpub on November 4, 2010.

Pours an amber-red color with a good light tan head. A finger or two worth with some bits of lace here and there. The nose brings out quite a bit of toasted bread, caramel, and some light dough. Amber malt in there as well. Some very light earthy and floral hops.

The flavor is just really, really nice. This is insanely malty and flavorful for the alcohol level. Caramel and bread crust plus a bit of toast and a nice earthiness to round things out. Great body with a very nice level of bitterness. A very quaffable brew.

On tap at the brewpub.

Pours a clear reddish orange, a bit of light brown up top, very thick off white head forms and slowly settles down to a thick layer and ring around the glass, lots of lace chunks stick.

Smell is nice, quite caramelized, honey, some toast and a bit of light floral, biscuity, corn syrup, a bit of light roast and some graininess, a bit earthy, not bad.

Taste is similar, pretty malty, caramel and biscuit, oats, some nice roast going through the middle, grainy, some fruit, a touch of chocolate, pretty solid bitterness.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with low carbonation, goes down silky smooth. Another nice one from Alchemist.

Consumed on cask at the Alchemist in Waterbury VT on 7/3/10.

Appearance: Brown with red/mahogany folds and a 1 finger white crown composed of fine foam. The crown shows moderate retention and good lace.

Smell: Medium roast malt and a healthy hop dosing (amarillo / chinook maybe?)

Taste: Same as nose.

Mouthfeel: Light side of medium bodied with a good soft carbonation.

Drinkability: The cask really helps the mouthfeel and this is all the more sessionable of a brew because of it!

sampled on tap at the brewpub may 31/2010. listed at 5.4% and 25 IBU.

pours deep red and almost perfectly clear with a nice tan head. the head drops very slowly and leaves lots of lace as it falls.

aroma is good. lightly toasted multi-grain bread and biscuit. hint of caramel. earthy herbal hop character. light alcohol. touch of toffee.

taste is good. toasted multi-grain bread and biscuit. caramel and toffee. hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and nutty character. low bitterness level. herbal and earthy. bit of fruity character starts to show as it warms.

mouthfeel is good. just over medium body with a nice dry finish. slightly under medium carbonation level.

drinkability is good. nice balance. tasty with a good malt character and nice depth. deceptively filling, but that may be the quesadilla that i paired it with talking...

Pours a darkish red color into my pint glass. Decent two finger head (good pour as always!) That leaves a bit of lacing.

Aroma is sweet and a good whiff of malt on the nose.

Taste is smooth with a hint of hops, caramel and sweet malt. Very somple and yet elegant.

Mouthfeel is full of caramel and hops. Very nice.

This is an excellent session ale. Its simple, full of flavor and accessible. I would love to brew something like this.

Off the tap at one of my all-time favorite joints (thanks Bart!) this brew had a big, three-finger head of off-white foam atop the chestnut/dark copper colored liquid. The retention was great, the lacing in nice bands. The aroma was quite hoppy and similar to an APA with some toasted malt. The flavors started with some semi-sweet caramel malt followed by hints of wood, elements of walnuts and then a hoppy, crisp finish. Though I thought it quite hoppy for a red it was still very enjoyable. The mouthfeel was smooth, the body medium/full and the carbonation delicate. Solid.

Good red colour, nice job of getting bitterness from 28 IBU.. Thinner mouthfeel, active carbonation. Fresh clean taste.

Two and a half years later, appreciated this better, the c hop and the malt, grapefruit, bubbly white head on reddish tinge. Carbonation had become perfecto.

I had this during a family vist to VT. This is a fine beer from a great brew pub. They did a fine job on this brew. Color is copper /red with a white fine bubbled head that left some lacing. Aroma is sweet malt and floral hops. Taste is slightly malty and sharply hopped, though a bit dry for the style IMHO. Still very tasty. I cannot wait to try thier beers again and their food is OFS!

Appears a dark amber with a 2 finger head and lots of lacing left all over.
Smell is of heavy malt...heavy on the crystal malt variety with an appearance of hops.
Taste is of a smooth red ale with a sweet balance of malt that hits on the middle of the tongue and slides to the back of the mouth with the hop bite.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a slight hop feel and a blend of a typical red ale.
Drinkability is pretty good for this style. A pleasant session brew.

Chestnut colored with a thick and foamy off-white head. This one unfortunately does not have an aroma to speak of, and has a bit of a watery mouthfeel, but the flavor is smooth ane even and enjoyable. All malt, a bit roasty, and on the mild side. No hop presence, but this is a tasty beer, very smooth and enjoyable and highly drinkable.

Pours a deep red with a thick off-white head which lasts. Hoppy is there in twang. Malty sweet adds a slight counter to the mellow hopping. Nice, clean, and smooth. Certainly a decent brew to drink the night away with. Not even close to my favorite at the Alchemist, but a solid brew none-the-less.
