Better than Pliny, eh? We'll see.
Pours a murky brownish-gold. Lot's of unfiltered stuff floating around in the glass.
Smell is slightly muted, but I can tell I'm in for an amazing DIPA. Perhaps I should let this warm up a bit more before I make any judgments. Pine, citrus, yum. Not getting as much aroma as I get from the Pliny (side by side comparison), although that might be because there's 2 weeks difference in the freshness between the two.
Well-rounded, it's a bit smoother than Pliny, not as much of a kick. But that's not necessarily a good thing in this category. Getting a little more complexity. I like it. Lots of pine and grapefruit flavor with a little something else in there that I can't put my finger on, maybe some apricot.
Overall, this is an outstanding DIPA, but I think I'll have to have it on tap before I can decide whether it lives up to the hype or not. Either way, I will seek this out again if I am on the East coast.
Well done, Alchemist.

7/22/14: at home, poured from a (fresh) can into a 16 oz. snifter
A: cloudy, light orange. some hop resin that sinks to the bottom.
S: one of the best smelling beers I've had: pineapple, orange, lemon, citrus.
T: similar to the smell, but the bitterness has a cumulative effect that grows harsher as you drink.
M: pretty balanced, not too thick/syrupy and not too dry.
O: the bitterness borders on being annoying, but the smell and taste more than qualify this to be considered among the best DIPAs around.
