Drank directly from the can, as the can itself instructed me to do. The hoppy goodness literally filled the room. I could smell the can from several feet away, beckoning me to come take a sip. I pulled it right from my fridge so I gave it about five minutes before I took my first sip after opening. Probably five of the most grueling minutes of anticipation in my life. There is obviously a lot of hype around this beer so I knew I was in for a treat.
The smell if floral and hoppy. There are citrus notes, a bit of grapefruit and something else that reminded me of sticking my tongue across a nine volt battery. I don't think metallic is appropriate, maybe electrifying? It was pleasant and fresh.
The taste of this beer is god nectar. It's a wonderful beer that is so balanced between bitterness and refreshing. There are flavors I haven't experienced in any beer. It's complex. I pull the citrus immediately and just a touch of booziness comes across the palate with the initial swill. The booze quickly dissipates and hops take over. I couldn't tell you what hops are used, why they are used, or what characteristics they impart on this beer but I can tell you that the mix is right and this beer is delicious. I want more of them and I want them now. The best way to describe this beer is fresh and unique. Maybe I got caught up in the hype machine a bit one this one but I think it's easily surpased to my expectations.

Not sure why there so much hype behind this beer. I loved the old Alchemist pub in Waterbury and miss it a lot. Alchemist makes a few great beers but Heady Topper isn't their best offering. Living near the brewery makes you hate it however. Tourist obsess over it and it's become an annoying attraction.
