Had this in a can (well, a couple of cans) in Burlington, VT. Stores all around were completely sold out but there were a few pubs on Church Street that still had them in stock.

Anyway, I ordered one with a glass not realizing that the can COMMANDS you to drink straight from it. I tried it both ways, and it is one great beer. Hell, you could drink this off the floor with a straw and come to the same conclusion.

Golden in color, and hazy (as is my memory after a few). The taste is amazingly well balanced between the sweetness and bitterness. It is a mighty brew, full of complex flavors that I can't begin to describe accurately. Needless to say it is relentlessly drinkable, but will put you right to sleep if you are not careful. Goodness gracious, it truly lived up to the hype.

I drank from the can so it's hard to judge appearance, but the can looks super sexy.

The nose is heavily fruity, but there's a piney quality to the hops too. A second whiff gives me some floral hints and.... more hops. What can I say? It's intensely hopped up, but it smells delicious.

Interesting. It's citrusy and grapefruit-like, but doesn't possess that dry bitterness that I usually find. There's still something fruity and berry-like going. Mid-palate there's a breakthrough of sweet, caramel-like malt, some breadiness, and more earthy hops. This provides an excellent balance.

Initially, the beer was drinking rather mellow-like, but with successive sips the intense bitterness overtakes my tongue. This thing is a beast. There's a good bit of carbonation and a medium-body that allow for some enjoyment before the brutally dry, long finish. I only get a hint of astringency on this towards the finish and that contributes to the dryness.

The fruitiness in this beer is what makes it most impressive. It's not excessively grapefruit heavy while still offering citrus and it's not overly piney either. It's deceivingly easy-to-drink and that would mean trouble if I had access to more.

Brew: The Alchemist Heady Topper
Intro: Many thanks to Jet and Danica for the great surprise @ CAAS. 16 oz. can/ Served in a tulip glass and shared with a friend.

Appearance: Pours a hazy orange with a fair head that subsides into lacing that lasts throughout. Although the can says “drink from the can” I couldn’t resist seeing for the first time.

Smell: Straight away hops and citrus bouquet. Reminds me of Pliny and the West Coast IPA’s. No barrel aging, no honey, nothing to get in the way. Just simple, straight away goodness.

Taste: An extension of the bouquet. Hop forward, piney, and citrus. Very clean. Very consistent with any high quality brew. Well balanced, not over the top like Palette Wrecker.

Mouthfeel: Dry, crisp, and clean. Not syrupy on the finish, not malty, just the normal hoppy aftertaste.

Overall: I’m not going to gush over the best beer known to civilized man. I believe there is a lot of hype surrounding this beer. Admittedly, it’s a great example of a DIPA. One of the best I’ve had or known about so far. It’s very drinkable and very enjoyable. Thank you again Jet and Danica for allowing me to experience this.
