Much like other excellent bierhalls near Marienplatz, this spot is often overlooked because of the more famous Weissesbauhaus across the street.
However, if you’re a Paulaner fan, this is a bierhall not to be missed. Why? They have nearly every brew Paulaner is responsible for. Those include the helles, dunkel, weiss, dunkelweiss, pils, roggen, kellerbier, Marzen (the amber export version), Salvator, Thomasbrau, and whatever seasonals are currently available. That selection is one of the single best Bavarian beer varieties you’ll see anywhere...at least for a single brewer.
My review is based upon a few different visits, the most recent being in June of 2011.
There are usually around 6-7 patio tables out front on warm days, and the front of the building has large windows and a door that create an “open air” feel in nice weather. The front room of the hall looks a little like a UK-style pub. There’s a bar with a bunch of taps behind it and a lot of smaller tables scattered throughout. The focus seems to be on the bar itself and there’s more space than most places.
The back rooms look far more like a traditional bierhall with longer/larger tables, wood paneling, and a small biergarten/courtyard in the rear.
Food is traditional fare, although it’s bit more expensive than most other places. The food’s solid, but there’s definitely a little “sticker shock” when you see the menu prices for the first time. I saw a lot of large family gatherings and family-style meal servings that were being shared around the restaurant. I get the feeling it’s probably a nicer night out for the local residents. You don’t need to dress up or anything, but the restaurant portion is certainly not the Hofbrauhaus. The front pub-like area is definitely casual, though. Personally, I almost always grab a beer or two when near the Viktualienmarkt area.
Hit up Paulaner Im Tal for one of the best selections around in a convenient spot. Don’t just spy the Weissesbrauhaus and overlook this gem across the street!

Convenience is....having several outstanding beer halls within a 5 minute walk. Paulaner im Tal is across the street from the Weisses Brauhaus, however I visited the two on seperate days. There's a medium sized bar at the from of the hall, and a sea of tables and chairs throughout. The interior looked more modern than other beer halls that I visited, and that's not always a bad thing.

6 different beers on-tap, plus an additional 4 from the bottle. The taps includes the classic hefeweizen, pilsner, dunkel weisse, kellerbier, and dunkel lager, and bottles include a light beer and Salvator. A couple sizes are offered for the draft beers and they are poured with beauty by the barman, who was easy to get attention.

Paulaner is synonymous with traditional Munich beer. Paulaner im Tal takes the concept and brings it to the 21st Century.

Visited this beer hall with my two oldest sons. The hall was actually fairly quiet as it was a bit late. Spacious front room centers around bar with very pretty woodwork. Atmosphere was pretty sedate but locals comprised most of the crowd there. Service was good and beer selection was quite good. Enjoyed a Dünkel and a Weizen but did not eat as we had previously eaten at Augustiner.
Felt fortunate to have had the opportunity to have drunk Paulaner in on of its halls. Enjoyed my brief visit there. Will definitely go again next time I visit Munich.
