Poured from a 16 oz. can into a Surly tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a bright and slightly hazy golden orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About one finger of off white head that fades into a thin patchy layer. Leaves a solid amount of lacing.

Smell: A grainy and somewhat fruity malt forward aroma. Pale malt with hints of grains, biscuit, straw, cracker, and yeast. Citrus fruit hints of orange and lemon. Subtle hints of earthy hops in the background. A fairly simple but solid pale lager aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a bready and grainy malt driven taste with subtle fruit notes. Pale malt with notes of grains, biscuit, cracker, straw, and yeast. Subtle earthy hop presence along with some citrus notes of orange and lemon. A pretty decent crisp taste for the style.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Crisp, clean, and very smooth.

Overall: A solid take on the pale lager style. Light but tasty.

A "Mexican style lager" from a Minnesota brewery. Why not?

Poured from the 16oz. can into a mug. This is a decent looking beer. A hazy golden straw color with some nice, fluffy foam that fades to a little on top and lacing around the edges of the mug.

The smell, frankly, isn't much. Maybe a little caramel, a little biscuit, and a little corn sweetness and maybe just a hint of grassiness.

This tastes pretty dang good. A little hit of bitter, not too sweet, with a little underlying hint of pine and fruit. It's crisp and refreshing.

Mouthfeel is a bit bubbly, light-bodied and fairly smooth.

Overall, this is an easy drinker with a decent amount of flavor for a lager. Goes great with a warm day.

A bunch of unintelligible letters and numbers on the bottom of the can but no clear date or even julian code. Clear product dating shouldn't be this hard, especially on a can. I digress.

Appearance: Surprisingly cloudy but with a nice honey color. Poured about a one finger white head that quickly dissipated but leaves a thin coating of suds.

Aroma: Something sweet akin to honey and classic lager yeast.

Taste: The flavor is difficult to describe and has many elements to it that come and go. The first thing that comes to mind is a honey flavor. Then that sweetness turns into an almost peppery, but not really bitter, hop bite in the finish and aftertaste. The description on the can doesn't mention the addition of honey to the beer so it may be a flavor coming through from the malt. The combination of honey and pepper tastes strangely of watered down amaretto liqueur, especially during the finish due to a final burst of sweetness. At 5% ABV it's really not a big beer so I'm not sure why the description claims it to be, however there is a good amount of flavor for that alcohol level.

Mouthfeel: Just below medium in body with tiny and aggressive carbonation bubbles. However, there is an undeniable smoothness to the beer as well. Definitely drinkable and probably sessionable in the summer heat, as long as the sweetness doesn't become cloying after the first one.

Final Thoughts: It took me several sips to decide whether I liked Amigo Grande or not. I've only had one other Mexican-style lager from a craft brewery but it was an imperial so it is hard to judge this one since it's a new style to me. However, as far as light lagers go, craft or otherwise, Amigo Grande is definitely up there in quality. At $2.99 for a single 16oz can it isn't exactly a steal but for craft purists it beats the macro options. Would I drink it again? Sure, I could see myself bringing it to an outdoor summer get-together.

Amigo Grande pours a pale straw color, with a small lacing head. There is a pale straw and corn like aroma. The taste is the same, funky corn flavors, spicy pale malts. Good body, but bad funky flavors. Overall it has some off flavors, some lemon notes, but is a bit offensive.
