Yay IPA in can thanks to joshtahan (Reddit). It tells me to drink it fresh but doesn't give me a date... really?!
Head riles up and I have to pour carefully, eventually settles at a nice creamy frothy 1+ finger head that fades at a med pace, soapy bubbles on the sides with nice lacing but lighter than expected, very hazy murky reddish orange color.
Nose decent hops, pretty big hops and seem mostly spicy and earthy, some mild citrus and candied orange peel, a little fruity, ruby red grapefruit, mild pith and plenty of citrus like juice, some sweet candy malts, little toasty reddish malt.
Taste brings candy malts out front, caramel sweetness, with a little toffee and syrupy candy uh syrup. Then hops come through but mostly drowned by the malts, a fair spicy hop note with fair bitterness, little rind and candied orange peel, into light pith and just a hint of ruby red grapefruit, and even a touch of melon rind fruitiness. The back end gets fairly bitter and eventually very bitter on the finish as it starts to dry off. A touch of booze comes through with mild warmth and some spicy hops, more orange peel, candied orange, little pith too, but also a bit sticky and syrupy feeling. Eventually booze gets a little hot and very slightly feusel.
Mouth is med to a bit heavier bod, syrupy, lighter carb, some warming then a bit hot booze.
Overall meh, it has some nice hop characters but the malts are just way too sweet, syrupy, and booze cuts in too much for only 8%. I'd be curious to try the Cat 3.

Wow my first category 5
A- looks great, deep orange that's pretty clear, nice one finger of white head and beautiful lacing
S- big hop profile! Nice grapefruit, a wet piney note, balanced by a sweet malt undertone
T- juicy grapefruit, citrus, pine, dank, nice bitter bite, with a nice sweet caramel malt backbone
M- mouthfeel is great, perfect amount of carbonation, medium to almost medium full body.
O- overall a great DIPA. Pretty much exactly what I want in a DIPA. Nice big tropical hop profile that's balanced by a light malt sweetness. Bitter and dry, but finishes nice and smooth. Taste very fresh, I can tell they use an insane amount of hops in this one. Great brew!
