American Brown Ale |  5.90% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
Nutty Brewnette is an American-style brown ale. A blend of four different dark malts contributes to a flavor profile that is sweet with “nutty” notes. A healthy dose of hops makes this beer hoppier and more balanced than most English brown ales.

Light brown, small ring of light tan head to it, not much there, not much to leave lace or any retention. Usual English malt aroma, lightly sweet, nothing too impactful.

Hey, wait, there's a good flavor, good hop presence yet still maintaining a smooth drinking, relatively low bitterness drinking experience, yet dry and almost a fringe of chalky cocao powder to the mouthfeel. Already, this puts it in an upper echelon of brown ale flavor for me. Great roast character, instead of getting a thin bland brown, you get something more akin to a sessionable American porter with plenty of nutty, toffee and caramel flavor to keep it rather robust.

Good, would recommend to my buddy who really likes Lost Coast's downtown brown.

Sampler at BJs Brewhouse in Sugar Land TX. Brewed at Saint Arnolds brewery according to the manager. Pours a nice dark brown with nice tan head. Has a nice nutty aroma, some sweet caramel malt. Taste is sweet caramel malt, light hops, with a nice nutty ending. Palate is nice med body, with good carbonation, nice smooth mouthfeel. Finish is cara,el malt, slight hops and a nice lingring nutty aftertaste. Overall a nicely balanced and tasty brew.

6 oz tap pour in a mini pilsner glass. 5.8% ABV, On tap at BJ's in Huntington Beach, CA.

A - From the tap, this brunette comes naked; a totally clear mahogany color with a small but self-assured off-white head.

S - Nutty is pretty nutty but definitely not crazy. Nuts and light cocoa with toasted toffee and caramel and biscuit notes is all the nose offers. Heavily malt-sided, no hops are found here.

T - Here's where the looker takes a dive; potent solvent rubbing alcohol taste with an off-flavor addition of diactyl. Toasted caramel malts with some nuttiness comes through in the background.

M - This medium-figured brunette is rank with a lush-like lingering alcohol burn that's not pleasant at all.

D - This becomes another BJ's beer that I didn't feel like finishing, in the sample size no less, it's alcohol comes out reminiscent of cleaning, solvent alcohol. It's also got an off flavor. Serious work needs to be done with this broad.

Had this at the West Covina, CA BJ's. Color was a clear chestnut brown with a minimal whitish head that quickly leveled off at a modest skim. Left a real nice patchwork of webby lace. The smell was rather muted but was of caramel and toffee and crystal malt with hints of hazelnut. The taste was sweet throughout with a gentle nuttiness and very mild hops bit in the finish.
Overall, a fair representation of the style. Could stand to have more flavor and aroma but is still pretty easily quaffed.

Pours a hazy brown body, with a delicious, creamy off white head. Nice aromas of nuts, sweet malt, caramel and some fruit. A bunch of nutty flavours, smooth malt, caramel and a touch of diacetyl. Smooth creamy mouthfeel. A very drinkable brown ale, full of flavour. One of BJ's best brews.

This is probably my go to beer when I am at BJ's

On tap at the Palmdale location

Look: Dark brown with traces of red throughout and a 1/2 inch head and good retention with some good circular lacing

Smell: Roasted malt and hints of caramel and coffee

Taste: Little bit of coffee in the foreground and a bit of vanilla in the background

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium carbonation

Overall: Good brown ale and great drinkability

Had in McAllen, TX. I assume that this is where the beer is brewed.

Pours a nice brown color that I can see through with a very decent head and retention.

There is a nice nutty smell with some good caramel malts with a nice tiny balance of citrusy hops.

The problem I have with BJ's brews is that they are a tiny bit astringent even in the maltier styles. However, there is a nice caramel malting and a good amount of nuttiness (which I love in brown ales).

I would like to like this beer even more, but the astringency from the alcohol ruins the mouthfeel a little bit and makes it harder to drink.

Originally sampled on 12 April 2002. I am writing this review from my notes. had this @ the BJ's in Irvine, CA. It's a tasty brown ale. I thought it was pretty good, but some of their other beers were far superior (grand cru, hefe...). I wouldn't go out of my way f or this, but if I were dinign at BJ's, this would be a good choice.

A - Clear medium brown color. Small head that was short lived with very little lacing.
S - Virtually no nose. I think I caught a small whiff of roasted malt.
T - First impression was an overly roasted version of a brown ale. I find it to be very unbalanced. The roasted flavor is overwhelming, and then a hit of malt sweetness, and then hops but it doesn't blend well.
M - On the thin side.
D - After the generous sampler, I didn't have any more of this beer.
