On Tap

Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Clear orange and amber with a small white head that leaves the glass messy with spotted and line lacing.

Big hop presence in the aroma, with lots of pine, resin, citrus, and marijuana attributes. There's some sweet malt character as well along with some earthiness.

The flavor too is hoppy, though there's significantly more malt present in flavor than in the aroma. The hops still present lots of pine resin and citrus, though there's substantial earth and sweet malt components as well. Moderately bitter.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation. A bit sticky. I like it a lot.

Well crafted, though a little bit maltier than I most often prefer.

Thanks!

Appearance: Clear orange-amber, dark for the style. Pours with a two finger head that retains well and leaves sheets of lacing.

Smell: Sweet pineapple - a ton of it. A bit of pine and orange, a little caramel malt. The scent of ripe pineapple is nearly dominant here. Alcohol is completely disguised. Smells delicious.

Palate: Like the nose implies, this practically tastes like pineapple juice. Sweet, ripe, delicious pineapple. There's a bit of orange and pine buried beneath the pineapple, along with a dash of caramel. Medium bodied, perhaps a bit more syrupy than I'd like, but the sweetness works well with the hop profile. The finish is mildly bitter and resinous. IBUs feel pretty high here but the malt balances things out. Alcohol is masterfully hidden.

Overall: A delicious beer if you don't mind a bit of malt in your DIPA. It's not excessively sweet for the ABV and the hop profile is excellent.

On tap at O'Brien's.

A: Pours a slightly hazy burnt orange color with a nice one finger ran head and a good amount of lacing down the glass.

S: Tons of pine needles and sap, some orange and a ton of malt. Something that smells like damp dog blanket too.

T: Lots and lots of malt here. A touch of piny hops and a good amount of resin an bitterness, but not really a ton of hop flavor. The malt dominates here and doesn't really add a lot in the way of good flavors. I wouldn't get this again.

On tap at the brewery on release day.

A: Dark orange with good transparency and an inch of creamy beige foam. Lacing is scattered.

S: Big pine resin character with accompanying earth, orange, and grapefruit. The hops are pungent and vibrant. There's a firm caramel malt presence providing balance. No alcohol in the nose. Floral notes are light and there's a dash of onion.

T: Sweet caramel malt lays a foundation for pronounced pine and grapefruit. There's a light candied sweetness with some lighter tangerine and orange notes. Alcohol is masterfully hidden considering the 10% ABV.

M: Medium body with moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and dry.

Overall: A big Double IPA that's highly drinkable given the strength. Maltier than I prefer, but the bright hop presence is able to rise above the malt foundation and express itself.
