Jet black body; very nice head, thick and compactly foamy. A respectable dark roasted grain and grain char scent; a touch of cocoa and a bare wisp of vanilla. Weak and watery taste yet still displaying some bitter chocolate and boozy notes. Heavy body, yet also having a diluted character; soft and spongy; alcohol warmth.

I don't know...I would have expected more substance and body to a beer of this style. Definitely "OK", but not something I would actively seek out again...

$ 13.28 (Including shipping)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.604/oz) from Tavour, Seattle, WA.
Undated bomber. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 54 degrees in a hand-washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.
First pour – Dark brown, clear.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, slight effervescence.
Head – Large (Maximum 6.2 cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, dense, short retention, diminishing to a four to six mm crown and a rocky cap.
Lacing – None.
Aroma – 4 – Roasted malt, milk chocolate.
Flavor – 4 – Begins slightly bitter with some chocolate. Chocolate is the predominant flavor, with the maltiness from the nose markedly absent. Ends slightly bitter. No alcohol, no dimethylsulfide, no diacetyl.
Palate – 3 - Thin, watery, lively carbonation.
Impression and summation – 3.25. - 0.25 point for being undated. The aroma is good with the flavor slightly less so. Notes from a previous tasting indicate the presence of bourbon barrels but they are absent in taste, aroma, and bottle notes. Pretty much looks like every Impy stout out there.

one of the most robustly flavored and objectively best beers i have had from these guys so far, and its awesome to have a big stout these days without all sorts of crazy additives in the recipe, a nice throwback in that way, and a reminder of why we all started liking imperial stout in the first place before the days of maple vanilla coffee lactose cinnamon chocolate caramel chili double barrel whatever the heck people are standing in lines for these days. this is slick and black from the bottle without a ton of head on it, an obvious viscosity, and a bit of shine as well, pretty in the glass. aroma is traditional russian imperial to me, heavy black malts, roasted barley, big espresso bean notes, and an appreciable yeast character thats loosely english. nuances of licorice and coal sort of minerality as well, right on! the flavor is nice too, plenty of bitterness from the roast to balance whatever sugar is left, the beer tastes mature even without a barrel, and there is more of a tobacco and raisin thing going on than i could smell, pretty complex as it warms too, cocoa and burnt wood notes coming out. lots of body and fairly smooth as they go, bitter and not syrupy, just a bit of the alcohol there, not offensive or anything, and a charcoal sort of thing there at the end, mellowing and intensifying at the same time it seems. really cool beer, im sure it would go well in a whiskey barrel too, but it doesnt need that. nice to see these guys execute this so well. i have been hit or miss on their stuff so far, but this is a winner!

Excellent Imperial Stout. Had at the new location in Boise on Father's Day. I'm not sure if I have to give it a full review. All the necessities are there. Ended up getting the bourbon barrel aged bomber to go.

22oz capped and waxed bottle served in a large snifter. Pretty sure @mr-jj gave it to me. I don't see a date on it.

Pours black (as it poured, the stream looked like a dark ruby brown) with a tiny ring of tannish head that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Carbonation exists, but is slow and tiny. Looks fairly normal for an imperial stout. Smell is almost burnt coffee -- extremely roasty. A bit of black licorice.

Taste is super strong on the black licorice, and not nearly as strong on the roasted coffee. A shame for me, because the reverse would be more pleasant -- I'm not a black licorice fan, except when it's more like an accent in a beer (not a central theme, like this beer). Consequently, I don't like it a lot, although I could see black licorice fans liking it a lot. If I search for it, there's coffee there. I'll keep drinking it for now and see how I feel after I get more accustomed to it and it starts to warm up. If I change my mind about it, I'll edit my scores.

Mouthfeel is almost thick, somewhat sticky. Overall, not a bad beer, but the flavor is not my favorite.

22oz bottle, black wax, 10% ABV, no date but likely the 2016 version. Pours black with a medium sized light khaki head. Smells of coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, char, and some faint dark fruit. The taste follows closely with mostly roasted malt and cocoa with some light char, coffee, earthy hops, and dark fruit. Not a super strong intensity, but smooth and balanced. Some alcohol comes through. Medium bitterness, subtle sweetness, and light dryness. Some noticeable variance between bottles in the level of char/roastiness (the bottles with less char were better). Below average body and average carbonation. Overall, nothing really stands out as special and it's not a 'heavy hitter', but it's very well-rounded and surprisingly pleasant. Great example of an IS and worth a try.
