I have had a bottle sitting in my fridge since Father's Day waiting for my son to be born so I could drink it on MY Father's Day. Any minute my wife could go into labor and shortly after I get to crack that tasty bottle and celebrate my own Father's Day!

Thanks for the beer, JohnGalt1!

Appearance: Pours out a rather thin looking dark brown color. 1.5" of khaki head forms on the pour, and that head has good retention and decent lacing.

Smell: Pretty nice milk chocolate character, with some vanilla, some nice oaky character, and a hint of bourbon. Could be a bit more pronounced and bold for me, but a decent start.

Taste: Fairly weak milk chocolate, as well as some bitter dark chocolate make up the bulk of the malt character. Also a hint of vanilla, and a bit of woody barrel flavor. Just a hint of bourbon. Comparing to the base beer, I do think it is more complex and flavorful.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Mouthfeel is pretty thin and watery for a beer of this ABV. Carbonation is appropriate. Overall, the BA version of this beer is better than the non BA version with added depth brought on by the barrel aging. The same base issues still plague the beer though. Thin, watery and more malt complexity needed. This beer really is not far off, just needs a little more work for my taste.

Appearance: Pours pitch black capped by less than an inch of well-tanned foam that quickly fades to a ringlet; makes up for the lack of head by laying down some impressive lacing

Smell: Charred oak, with black bread and some pine

Taste: The hops intrude almost immediately, bringing an earthy/piney bitterness that overwhelms the underlying black bread and charred flavors; post swallow, there is a hint of Bourbon and caramel, though it lacks the depth to offset the hops; in the finish, the stout finally arrives, bringing a nuance to the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: A rather curious brew that tastes a bit more like a barrel-aged ABA than a stout; the mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style, too; I wonder what type of barrels were used here as the Bourbon flavors are rather fleeting though the oak comes through clearly

Thanks, JohnGalt1, for the opportunity

No date on this one that I could find.

A: Pours pitch, pitch black. Big, dense dark brown head. Head fades away slowly, leaving thick slices of lacing behind. Great retention too, a thick 1/8" layer that never dissipates.

S: Huh, interesting aroma. Cocoa and burnt sugar. Hint of oak. Something else I can't quite place, a little umami maybe? Pretty mellow and sweet.

T: Lots of bourbon up front. Sweet caramel and burnt sugars. Bittersweet chocolate to balance it. Sudden hit of acrid smoke and umami in the finish. Umami carries through to the aftertaste like burnt BBQ meat.

M: Pretty viscous and heavy. Nice.

O: Hmph, tough one to score. It's got nice strong flavors with a heavy and smooth body. Kind of an odd aftertaste though, it's suddenly meaty and smoky which I'm not overly fond of. I tried to average out my likes and dislikes to arrive at a score.

Waxed 22oz bottle split with my brother...my portion into my Rock Island snifter.

A: Dense opaque black pour with a frothy brown head that leaves a bit of lacing and some visible alcohol feet.

S: Malt, light hits of caramel and vanilla from the barrels...very light booze and faint woodiness...light molasses, chocolate and roast. Warmth reveals another layer of rich decadence...rich chocolate and brownie batter.

T: Some caramel and light barrels notes here too, with more sweetness and faint bourbon...vanilla...roast is here too but its buried...toasted barrel wood/oak is faint...nice notes of decadent chocolate weave through the flavor profile at room temperature.

MF: Creamy medium body - would prefer thicker for a nearly 10% Impy stout, but the alcohol is still well hidden. Carbonation is medium-light.

O: A good BA offering from the locals! Really, this is pretty darn tasty. A solid effort, though the flavors and body seem a bit light.

22oz bottle picked up at the brewery on Thursday night... Shared with reinheitsgematt (AKA COOP Matt) last night. Poured into my HotD goblet.. The head on this one is possibly the darkest I have ever seen... Deeep brown.... the brew stains the glass with each swirl.. pretty good retention, could possibly use a bit more lacing.

Nose is rich dark cocoa and fairly thick roastiness... the barrels show as more vanilla and dark cherry than straight woodiness. Smells damn good... Almost like an all natural "Tootsie Roll" with warmth.

Flavors are also rich... essence of bourbon spiked espresso brownies... good malt character and interaction.. nothing overpowers other qualities ..

My only real bitch would be the body is a bit light for such a massive brew.. carbonation was also a bit light, but that added to a velvety mouthfeel... This brew is nicely done... I am impressed.
