Served at room temperature in a 500 ml weizen glass.

I tried a relatively hard pour with this stout because I love to watch the cascading effect it has on the body and head of similar brews. The desired effect was not forthcoming. Initially the bubbles on the beige head were tightly-formed but they soon underwent a reaction and formed large Swiss cheese like apertures. the body was, of course, the desired degree of black. I can't complain about the amount of lace.

On the nose I detected subtle hints of molasses and of coffee. Not a strong aroma that grabs your attention.

The taste was alarmingly sweet. This is, if you are in the mood for a dessert beer, wonderful stuff! However, I suspect most people would find the sweetness cloying.

On the palate, Royal Stout is as smooth as velvet. Well done!

At 6.6% and because of the intense sweetness, I wouldn't want to drink too many. Keep in mind that Royal Extra Stout is a dessert beer. How many helpings of dessert do you usually take?

Highly recommended under the right circumstances.

A: The beer is very close to being jet black in color—slight traces of red are visible near the edge of the glass is held up to a bright light. It poured with a quarter finger high tan head that died down and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Moderate aromas of sweet dark malts are present in the nose along with notes of cola and hints of lactose.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell and is rather sweet and tastes like unfizzed cola with notes of lactose.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat thin on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: To me, this beer tastes like a hybrid between a Foreign/Export Stout and a Milk/Sweet Stout.

Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.

Ooh, it's royal and extra? Shit... Anyway, this stuff pours a deep, dark black-brown topped by a half-finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises light treacle, roasted malts, mild cocoa powder, and a touch of dark fruits in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with the cocoa taking primary control. Everything is softer here, as though 'twere painted with pastels. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a creamy feel. Overall, a surprisingly tasty, disturbingly drinkable stout.

I purchased this from halftime enjoyed chilled from the bottle in a snifter.

The color is black with opaque clarity with thin tan cap with fine bead, lace clings in rings. The smell is very vinous like black cherry with light sweet malt odor with some roasted notes. The feel is great with some light sweetness and dry roastiness with moderate carbonation and mild aclohol effect on the palate with a creamy accent.

The taste is nothing like the aroma except it does have a mild fruity yeast flavor with some dark cocoa and caramel in the middle with slight coffee-like acidity with slight sweet flavor with nutty dark toffee and mild biscuit tinges, a very gentle hint of vanilla rounds out the taste with a dark cherry tinge coming in late in the taste which is intriguing and adds to the complexity. Overall a great stout it is drinkable and complex with lots of stone fruit and dark malt to make for an enjoyable middle strength stout.

Another courtesy of Rampaige. Poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a very nice black color, with just a thin cap of tan head that had low retention and lacing.

The aroma was pretty soft, a touch of gentle roast over a base of solidly basic malt. The beer was basically the same on the tongue, but sadly there was a just enough of an odd funk that was mildly off-putting.

The body was decent, but thinner than I like in a stout, more Porterish. Drinkability was OK, but that funk kinda hurt it. Overall, a decent enough brew, and if want a change of pace while you're on your tropic holiday, this would suffice.
