The bottle backlog continues to fall in the wake of my decision to eradicate bottles from at least my kitchen and perhaps from my inventory. I am awash in the daggum things and they are standing between me and The CANQuest (TM) and I will not abide it any longer. This one is courtesy of my local, in-person trader, tone77.

From the bottle: "The Original and Genuine".

Wow, a whole 330-ml.! I'll be done before I really get started. I really enjoy getting the darker beers started because once the heavy-handed pour begins, the pseudo-cascade is obvious. The resulting three fingers of dense, rocky, deep-tan/light-brown head with excellent retention resembled a chocolate milkshake. Color was a dense, dark-brown (SRM = 44), allowing zero light penetration. Nose was sweet, but raw, like molasses or brown sugar, with a slight underlying smokiness. The heavy lacing left behind by the head as it fell was going to require a jackhammer to remove later. Mouthfeel was full and creamy, very dense, like a dollop of it had been laid on my tongue. The taste was odd, slightly chocolaty, but with a smoky, oily bitterness, like carob. Carob from Carib! Finish was semi-sweet, but still more bitter than what I was expecting in a Sweet Stout.

11.16 FL. OZ/330mL bottle poured into a pint glass at standard refrigerator temperature.

A: Pours very dark, almost completely opaque with a thick leathery tan head that leaves gobs of lacing.

S: Mild coffee, molasses and cola with a hind of licorice or star anise.

T: Sweet lactose flavor with sugar cane molasses. The taste is very similar to a Guinness milkshake (Guinness, chocolate ice-cream and Jamison's) without all that alcohol. Hard to believe it is only 4.9% ABV.

M: Medium bodied with a smooth creamy sensation. A little syrupy with low carbonation. Almost too easy to drink.

O: This beer is a good representation of a Milk Stout with the triple X being more on the milk that on the stout. May be too sweet for some, but I liked it as a good stand-alone beer.

Poured from a brown 11.2 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is some malts, sweetness, a bit smokey. Taste is sweet, creamy, malts, some chocolate, tasty and enjoyable. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall is a good quality brew.

Pours jet black with just the slightest glints of cherry on the edges. A huge rocky tan head lasts a good while, draping the glass in lace chunks on the way down. The aroma is of milk chocolate and trail mix with a light bit of coffee. The taste is of Nutella with a lactic sweetness mingling with a restrained roastyness. Its dryer than I was expecting, though hops are very diminutive, providing just some bitterness. The mouthfeel is full bodied with a light, sparse carbonation. The finish is of cocoa and a light fruityness.

Complex and not overly sweet, a very good milk stout that I’d recommend.

330 mL bottle from a six-pack picked up at the LCBO; best before June 2014. I tend to find these Caribbean export stouts to be very hit-or-miss, but this one's relatively high aggregate score (and, more importantly, the relatively low abv) suggest that this particular brew might sit rather well with me. Served slightly chilled.

Pours a deep brownish-black colour, completely opaque, and topped with two fingers of pillowy, frothy, tan-coloured head. Excellent retention; it recedes gradually and unevenly, leaving behind a lumpy, billowing cap and plenty of lacing. Looks great to me. The aroma is relatively enticing, but doesn't offer anything unusual or interesting for the style - milk chocolate and roasted malts comprise the bulk of the nose, with some minor notes of toffee and molasses. Definitely leans on the sweet side, as one would probably expect given the style.

Tasty stuff, with a straightforward flavour profile that shouldn't be challenging to too many palates. It's decidedly malt-forward, with the initial molasses and roasted barley flavours leading into some milk chocolate and lactose sugar notes. I get a bit of a root beer/cola vibe toward the finish. As for the aftertaste, it offers a pleasant mixture of roasted malts and lactose sweetness, with the latter lingering on the palate for a longer period. Medium-bodied - actually pretty thick for something of such low alcohol content, likely due to all the sugars used during the brewing process. Fortunately, this stout never even entertains the thought of becoming cloying - it's obviously fairly sweet, but the roasted barley balances it quite adeptly. The carbonation is a little high for my liking at first, but half-way through the glass it calms considerably and I am left with one tasty, smooth-drinking stout.

Final Grade: 3.84, a B+. Carib Brewery's Mackeson Triple XXX Stout is easily one of the best export stouts I've ever had the pleasure of trying, and at $13.00 per six-pack it's pretty good value, too. Potentially sessionable, but realistically I don't think I'd want more than 2 of these in a night; it's just too sweet. Any fan of (or anyone curious about) milk stouts/sweet stouts should consider this one worth a look, as this is a tasty, bare-bones example with no glaring faults. If this one's too light for you, consider trying this brewery's Royal Extra Stout - which has many of the same flavours, condensed into a higher-abv package. Cheers!

11.2oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Deep black pour with a creamy tan head the holds at a half inch crown. Lacing sticks to the glass in net-like gobs.

S: Mild coffee roast, soft char. Thick, black molasses. Chocolate truffles. Earthy yeast. Hint of black licorice. Cane sugar. Plum.

T: Sticky black molasses. Lots of plum and darkfruit. Carob. Iced coffee with double cream and sugar. Sugary lactose comes on strong middle to end with a pronounced cane sugar taste. Long, sweet and sugary finish.

M: Thick body, though not too heavy. Very round, creamy, and filling in the mouth. Syrupy and chewy as it sits longer on the tongue. Low carbonation.

O: This is the sweetest milk stout I've ever had, to the point that I fear I might contract diabetes after a glass. It also has that heavy extract-y Caribbean stout feel to it. Toning back the sweetness a bit would do a lot for it.

Glad to see this beer is back on the market again after production ceased for a few years! Got an 11.16 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. This beer is a a dark brown color with a nice thick light to medium brown colored head 1/2 inch thick when poured, settling to a nice surface coating about 5 minutes later along with a nice thick ring lining the inside of the glass. One of the darkest heads I have ever seen on any beer. This beer lets in no light whatsoever. Very nice lace. Sweet malty aromas with coffee, caramel and chocolate notes are present. Has a strong sweet chocolate malt flavor along with some caramel and a bit of coffee as well as a little vanilla. Amazing flavor profile. Rounded out with just the slightest bit of hop bitterness on the back end, but the sweetness dominates for sure. Has a very smooth, creamy, frothy, yet somehow still somewhat crisp, full bodied mouthfeel with a sort of milky texture to it along with moderate carbonation. Very easy to drink the way good beer like this should be. Probabley the best beer of this style I have ever had!

Eric

A: The beer is jet black in color. It poured with a thin tan head that died down, raving a thin head covering the surface and a large collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of lactose are present in the nose along with notes of cola.
T: The taste has a strong dose of lactose flavors along with notes of cola and a light amount of sweetness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is a good representation of the style, although I wished that the taste was a little more complex and had flavors of chocolate and/or roasted malts.
