I bought this because it's an in state stout, and I loved the description. I didn't expect much, and was very pleased. It was very well balanced, and the coffee and chocolate tastes didn't clash with the barley at all. Overall it was a medium mouth feel, a little lighter than I expected. I'd give it a go again, it's a good beer...and a great outdoor beer.

WIFE TAKE: That devil is pretty, but why Chocolate beer? Is it like a dessert?

APPEARANCE: Jet black with a pretty solid, long-standing head of about a finger and a half. The head doesn’t even settle all the way, it stops at about a half-inch and just hangs around.

SMELL: Strong coffee aromas in the nose with hints of chocolate and maybe a touch of chili pepper. The bitter smell of the coffee is accentuated by the hops.

TASTE: The roasty flavors are far more subtle than I expected them to be after the first smell, but the chocolate comes through strong. I still get a touch of chili in here as well. It’s pretty tasty, but I also pick up some mild astringency.

MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied, goes down silky smooth. There is no way I would have guessed this is even 6.5%, I would have thought somewhere in the 4.5% range. Extremely easy to drink, if that slight pucker wasn’t there this would get a 5 in the mouthfeel department.

OVERALL: Pleasantly surprised overall, but I wish it wasn’t as astringent. This beer has potential, can’t wait to get my hands on another one.

Poured a rich, deep black body with a thin cap of tan head. A very nice looking body for a stout, but the lack of any head formation was disappointing. Scents of black coffee, milk chocolate, some cream-like sweetness, some dark fruit and a hint of roast malt. A good stout aroma, but a bit standard. Flavor is a bit sweet starting out, with notes of sweetened coffee with cream and milk chocolate. Middle moves into more milk chocolate flavors and hints of dark fruit. Finish is lightly sweet with notes of cocoa, semi-sweet chocolate, cream-like sweetness and a bit of roast malt. Aftertaste is semi-dry with notes of roast malt and black coffee. A rather sweet flavor for an American Stout, with a sweeter take on the typical flavors and a nicely roasty finish. Mouthfeel is medium-light bodied with light carbonation and a smooth feel. A good, fitting feel. Overall this is a decent stout. The aroma is fitting and pleasant, the flavor is good, but a bit sweet and it has a good mouthfeel. It just needs to be a bit drier in flavor to be a good example of the style.

Appearance: Coal black brew, thin head of deep brown foam that dissipates quickly with zero tracing.

Smell: Rich cocoa, wheat, barely there hops. Sweet and heady.

Taste: Taste backs up the smell: Notes of chocolate, dark barleys, wheat. Aftertaste is slightly acrid and smoky. 6.66% ABV (unless that's a marketing gimmick) but I didn't detect much alcoholic heat in the mouth.

Mouthfeel: Not as heavy or oily as you might expect.

Overall: This is a nice stout, mild when chilled but becoming more complex and interesting as it warms to room temperature. I bought a sixer in July; may have to save a couple bottles for the colder months just in case I can't find it again.

Poured from a 12oz bottle to a pint glass.

A - Dark, dark, dark. Standard stout. Slightly khaki head that remained throughout. Incredible lacing.

S - Coffee and almost like a milk stout. Malt all the way.

T - Malty in front, malty in the middle, malty in back. No alcohol detected, nor hops.

M - Heavy, just as expected by the taste. Just as much carbonation as expected by the style.

O - A standard microbrew stout. As a stout fan, I'd definitely drink this if it were on tap. Not exemplary, but certainly worth trying against foreign stout beers. This beer doesn't do anything well, but does everything pretty well. Giving it an overall 4 might be a bit much, but I definitely enjoyed it.

Picked up a single at Fry's as part of a mixed sixer back in early February for $1.50. No freshness date.

Beer poured black with a beautiful brown head that is hanging around.

Nose has hints of chocolate sweetness and not much else.

Taste is roasted malts, chocolate, and hints of toffee. It is a bit on the sweet side as designed but not in a cloying fashion.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied but not overly smooth.

Overall the flavor profile is very nice, would pair well with a brownie or chocolate cake.

12oz bottle poured to tumbler

Dark as night, tidy persistent head

Aroma has some interesting vague notes of plum, caramel and smoke

Flavor is bold, sweet, grainy but a tad burnt sugar on the front almost had me liking it less. A sneaky anise aftertaste brought the score up. Better warmer, for sure.

Mouth feel is close to perfect for a CO2 stout: full with a little snap

Overall: damn nice effort from a sorta local brewer I've had yet to experience. Grain bitterness and malt sweetness well balanced. Far beyond caramelization, the burnt notes are a distraction.
