On cask @ the Forest & Main Brewing Company (Ambler, PA) on 11/2/12. Served in a mug.

Pours a clear copper, with ½ finger of smooth foamy head that has a bit of an off-look to it. This retains with a moderate frothiness in the glass, leaving some light spotty lacing behind. The aroma smells leafy, spicy and citric in the nose, backed by some light medicinal notes and a combination of buttered toast and some tangier caramel character.

The taste has a touch of caramel sweetness to it but the malts are overall coming off as having a dry buttered toasted feel to them. Hops give this a solid green citric bitterness that keeps this crisp in the mouth and trails a leafy spiciness in a dry and bitter finish. The mouthfeel is lighter to medium bodied with a soft crispness on the tongue. The overall feel here is definitely on the lighter side but I was still happy to find that this still had some presence in the mouth.

This was a nice take on an English Bitter that was flavorful, well balanced and most of all, quite drinkable here on cask. Sessionability was very high on this one!

A: Reddish brown body. Thin off-white head.

S: Toffee, warmed caramel, mild nutty component, faint raisin-like fruit notes as it warmed.

T: Big toffee component as well as a nice semi-sweet caramel, a bit of nuttiness in the finish.

M: Medium bodied. Creamy with gentle carbonation. Soft finish-could be a bit cleaner.

O: A fresh bitter can be a real gem. Sadly, very few American breweries do it well. Forest & Main's offering does the job.
