Another beer from the Single, Fresh, Wet & Wild festival that wasn't an ipa or pale ale.

Red ale pours red, albeit more of a brownish red. Beige head, 1/3". Aroma of centennial hops, pine, wood, grapefruit rind kind of smells. Wet hop oils covered up by maltiness that makes a red ale a red ale.

Taste is decent, even if significantly limited by a pretty hot mouth feel. You get plenty of sticky ass red malt trappings along the way, but this is generously hopped giving it a counter punching bitterness alongside the hefty toffee and irish moss counterpart. Plenty boozy that detracts from the overall drinking experience. For something at a hop harvest festival, this really came hard with the maltiness and general bitterness as opposed to the nuances of why wet hopped beers even exist.

Plenty thick body that comes at the expense of the wet hops, even though there is plenty of heavy handed bitterness and astringency.

"This Red Hot Mama was not one to mess with. She hooked up with a Harley gang, and made her way down to Atlanta looking for a soul to steal. She met her match with El Danko, and the two of them got nasty in the brewhouse together; clothes and hops were flying all over the place. The load of fresh Centennial hops were dropped, and Head Brewer Nick Nock scrambled to use 'em as they smelled extra dank! After hosing off, El Danko showed her to the door. He knew he didn't have enough left in him for another round." Brewed in the style of a Wet Hopped Imperial Red Ale. Brewed as an autumn 2013 installment of the Dank Tank series, available in limited run 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a SweetWater snifter. Served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy frothy foam head of an ecru-tan white color over a deep red/near medium brown with maple highlights, flecked sediment and light relaxed carbonation. Retention is very good, lacing is light and tiered. 4

(Smell) Spicy, fruity and peppery wet hops forward, much denser in presentation than their dry hop counterparts, alongside a biscuity caramel malt with a faint roastiness and a mild sweetness underneath. The potency is modest. 3.5

(Taste) For a Red Hot Mama, the hop profile is fairly easy going, with a moderately bitter wet piney, fruity hop flavor atop a smooth caramel and biscuit malt body with a mild sweetness. It finishes with a touch of cold roastiness alongside a pinch of grain. Highly drinkable, yes but admittedly underwhelming in the hop character which is at least half the focus of the beer. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) The texture is moderate slick, medium chewy and very slightly dry. Carbonation generates a soft frothiness for a smooth, relaxed mouthfeel. The body is shy of medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly wet bitter over sweet. The alcohol presence is mild, and there are no notable off characters. 3.75

(Overall) What comes off as a simple harvest red ale isn't anything spectacular in hop nor malt flavor, rather fairly pedestrian and simple. If the Dank Tank series bottles weren't priced at such a bargain, this might have been a somewhat regrettable purchase. For the style itself, I've had much better wet hopped ales that showcase hop bitterness, flavor and malt depth better than this, but it might be a good transitional beer between the mild mannered IPA and something akin to Celebration or Founder's Harvest Ale. The most enjoyable part was the appreciated malt profile which was quite decent, if not enjoyable. Quite the tame wet ale that may be red in appearance, but tastes short of hot. 3.75

Mahogany brew w/ tan head, good lacing & head retention. Bready, smoky malt & floral aromas. Sweet maltiness at start, ending hoppy & spicy.

A:
Pours an almost clear and incredibly dark burgundy-looking color (mainly in the light, otherwise it almost appears black) with two fingers of thick, creamy tan head that eventually settles to a big film, but is very active. Very good retention; delicate lacing.

S:
Very sweet. Molasses, oats, some hoppy astringency, dark fruits, licorice.

T:
Musty, dirty, vaguely sweet. Dark bread, pepper, molasses, earth, herbal hops, roasty caramel malt. Really interesting.

M:
Medium-full bodied with almost undetectable carbonation. It is fairly drinkable and has a lasting, but not smarmy finish/aftertaste.

O:
An interesting beer to say the least.
Pours gorgeous, with a huge head of nitro-like cream. Wonderful. The nose is peculiarly 'molasses-y' with a really big malt profile. However, it pretty much smelled like molasses to me. The beer tastes quite good, but with the same musty molasses quality. It is less hoppy than other similar beers I have had, but it is quite well-balanced and the hops are definitely present, but well-hidden.
This is a strange-but-good beer which is fairly drinkable, but which kind of wore me down after a while.
Would maybe have again, if it was around; worth trying for the 'interesting-ness' of it (although maybe that is just me).

A) Pours with a finger thick, tight, creamy, beige colored head. Settles slowly. Deep ruby in color. Weak lacing on the drink down.
S) Subtle caramel notes. Hints of spruce and citrus. Overall not very aromatic.
T) Classic red characteristics - caramel, slightly grainy. Add to the mix a noticeable alcohol. Lingering piney notes in the aftertaste - a bit astringent.
M) Medium body. Dry. Alcohol warmth.
O) Overall an okay brew. The finishing hop characteristics are a bit too bitter, almost as if the brew has turn to the "dark side". Could be the case since the release date was Oct. 2013 six months ago.
