What happens when a 500year old Belgian style ale gets rear-ended by a truckload of pompous American hops? It equals one heck of an ambulance chaser of a beer.
This is an American style Belgian IPA, with a subtle phenolic flavor in combination with citrusy/piney hops, well balanced at 6.2% and 55 IBUs, with a tart, dry finish.
2014 World Beer Cup Bronze Medal winner for American-Belgo-Style Ale category.
Grains: 2-Row, Wheat, Flaked Oats
Hops: Bravo, Ahtanum, Centennial, Cascade
Dry Hop: Ahtanum, Centennial, Simcoe
55 IBUs

Pours a clear deep gold producing almost 2 fingers of frothy, white somewhat lasting head that leaves scattered blotches & motes of lace. Aroma is earthy & slightly musty, floral, orange & lemon (more pith or zest than fruit with a greater degree of fruit for the orange) pineapple & pine, a low profile caramel & biscuit maltiness with something vaguely mint-like deeply buried underneath. Taste is divergent from the nose & less complex: Moderate hop bitterness with some citrus & grass, lightly floral with a subdued earthiness. Pale malts evident but almost no wheat flavor or Belgian yeast mustiness. Some soft breadiness. Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied (maybe a little oily & chewy from the oats) with moderate carbonation that combine with the hops to produce a slight prickly spiciness.

Pretty decent White IPA with balanced hop bitterness and a good wheat character. Drank it out the bottle so I didn't get a look at it. It was good but I think I would prefer the Hop Hash or their other IPA's.
