"We are walking the line with this Double IPA! Not just another boy named Sue, this renegade would get us thrown into Folsom prison with the amount of Citra "hop hash" we scraped from the inside of the Yakima palletizes and fisted into this beer. This super concentrated hash is pure hop lupulin (ya know - the hop kief - the good stuff!) and will play a resinous riff with the pilsner, 2 row and wheat malt used to back up the man in black! With Amarillo on the drums setting the bitterness beat, Citra Hash takes the mic in the whirlpool, packing a sticky aromatic punch with potent lyrics creating a heavy hop forward set worthy of a July Carter finger dip." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial IPA. Available in limited run 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a SweetWater snifter. Served above 53º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foamy head of a light cream color over a modestly hazy golden amber body with faint speckled sediment in tow. Carbonation is light and spritely. Retention is very good, lacing is light and tiered. 4.25

(Smell) What a unique hop aroma hop blocks make, very zesty tropical fruit notes of mango, papaya, and lesser pineapple with some lesser lemon, pepper, and resin. The hop bitterness is perceivably moderate. The malt profile is soft with a light pale syrup malt, a touch of wheat with a moderate sweetness. Potency is medium/high. Bonus points for a very unique, bright and original hop aroma, if not due to the hop choice itself than by the way it was integrated into the beer. 4.25

(Taste) Bright tropical fruit notes forward, moderate citrus, lemon and grapefruit with a moderate bitterness. Very pale malt syrup profile with a mild body, a slight fluffiness and chew from wheat malt. The hop profile again comes out very well in this Imperial IPA without the burden of a filling malt body that commonly comes with the style. It works very well. 4.25

(Mouthfeel) Texture is soft, lightly chewy and faintly dry. Carbonation generates a light frothiness for a soft mouthfeel. Body is shy of medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is light and there are no off characters to note. 4

(Overall) I've had SweetWater's latest release, Hop Hash IIPA and it triggered this review. While I'm not certain how often breweries use hashed hops in their brews, it's clearly evident that these hops still have a ton of life and flavor in them and are still capable of producing a huge range of flavor. I find it a preferable use of hops for Citra over other styles and am hoping that SweetWater dabbles further into their experimental styles with hop hash. Johnny Hash is quite notably the finest release in their Dank Tank series to date. 4.25

A 220z bomber picked up back in April 2014. Its bottled in 6 packs now.

A - Copper yellow, with 1 finger of head and sticky lace left all over the glass. Impressive

A - Dank wet hops! Citrus and bitter. So well balanced. Well done!

T - Dank and hoppy up front. 2 row malt in the middle, and a citrus/bitter

M - Medium bodied, medium carbonation. Slick. Smooth.

O - Tasty as hell. Glad SW made this a year round brew. Apparently grabbing citra hop resin off the bottom of the pellet carton is easier done than expected. Well done!

A: poured from a 22oz bottle into a pint glass, orange amber colored with a huge white head that lingers leaving good lacing, clear

S: sweet cirtrus fruit salad, mango, papaya, tangerine, grapefruit, honey, orange

T: very sweet fruits up front, mango, tangerine, moves to a bitter grapefruit finish, juicy and resinous, mouwatering

M: full bodied and sticky with higher carbonation, alcohol well hidden

O: Very pleasantly surprised at how well this West Coast style DIPA from the craft brewery that I grew up alongside is done. I hope they make this again, because it is excellent.

Sweetwater johnny hash
Dank tank double ipa - citra hop hash

A: Golden amber and clear. Head is near white with a nice slick hoppy beer texture. Lace in the form of spots...

S: Aroma is very fruity, sweet, hoppy dank with farmy floral scents, and buttercreamy malt with a doughy smell. Grassy, light citrus rind, heavy piles of grapefruit juiciness, some apple, and an array of tropical goodness.

T: Nice bready malt body with sweet fruit all over. Nice bitterness through the finish... Fruits include passionfruit, apple, sweet grapefruit, mango, and perhaps pineapple. Sweet, juicy, and bitter enough to balance.

M: Mouthfeel goes on forever. Sticky, resinous, and clingy but even dryness throughout.

O: Good stuff.
