From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #65 (June 2012):

First brewed on Bob Marley’s birthday? Well, isn’t that interesting. Moving on. A solid Porter all around, and an easygoing one at that. Subtle complexities pop up here and there. The sweetness certainly sets it apart from most Porters.

LOOK: Dark brown with edges of red, excellent lacing

SMELL: Brown malt, treacle, cacao nibs, toasted bread, over-caramelized raisins, hint of alcohol, chicory

TASTE: Very creamy, smooth, roasted twang, heavy raisin character, caramel, semisweet, cocoa powder, mild roast coffee, toasted husk, modest hopping, creamy finish

"First brewed on Bob Marley's birthday, this legend-ary porter initially delivers distinct Irie hop notes which transcend into rich waves of chocolate malt, creating a multidimensional taste experience! Lively up yourself!". SweetWater finally gave this elusive beer full-time status in 2012 and discontinued it again in April 2013 amidst poor sales, despite a silver medal victory at the previous year's Great American Beer Festival. Exodus porter is brewed in the style of an American Porter.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a SweetWater pint glass. Served north of 54º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a medium brown frothy head over a deep brown body with crimson highlights. Retention is average at best, lacing is very light and spotty. This beer doesn't have much appeal in it's appearance. 3

(Smell) Very forward chocolate nibs, hints of toffee, roasted barley, a pinch of oats and some vanilla. Balance is moderately sweet over bitter, with no notable astringencies. Medium potency. The aroma is very inviting and a sure winner for fans of sweet dessert porters, especially chocolate and caramel fans. 4.25

(Taste) The flavor thins out and much of the sweetness mellows out for a more rounded, lighter bodied porter than anticipated. Modest, dry cocoa notes with traces of caramel husk for a touch of body and character. Some bitter malts and earthy hops add a note of balanced bitterness. Despite being in the position of a beer with no defining stand-out flavors, it is well-balanced and highly drinkable. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Slick, oily with a mild syrupy presence. Carbonation adds a subtle creaminess to the texture, as well as some fuzzy crispness. Balance is equally bitter over sweet, a touch more hop and malt prevalent than the average porter. Body is medium for a porter, medium overall. Alcohol presence is light. I find the texture a bit indecisive on direction, although for a hoppier, huskier porter it works out better than expected. 3.75

(Overall) I'm a little saddened that this beer only came to market for a little over a year before SweetWater pulled the plug on it. Porters are largely unappreciated in Georgia. I'm doubtful that one will be able to get a case of this in October, but keep an eye on those Tackle Box Variety Packs and should it return for a limited time, it is a fine, well balanced and enjoyable porter to try. 3.75

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle into a stein. This beer is more than 18 months from its best by date, but given to me by a friend from Atlanta.

The beer pours a dark black with brownish hues and a thin head. I consider this pretty decent looking given the time that has passed.

The smell is initially hard to detect, but notes of coffee and chocolate emerge as do roasted malts. The taste is more of the same, with just a slight acidic bitterness. This is offset by sweet maltiness, creating a well-balanced brew.

The beer drinks smoothly apart from the acidity, which adds a slight roughness to the dry finish. Still, a good beer and one I enjoyed sipping while watching MNF.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Pours dark black, no foam. Brown tinges, coffee notes mild nose. Smooth taste, coffee flavors, strong vanilla. Mild bitter in the background, Sticky mouthfeel. Chocolate and creamy. Pretty good porter.

I see now that the beer is discontinued - hope they came up with a comparable alternative.
