A- Very nice brown rust-ish brown color. clear but not transparent. foam is white and fluffy -dissipates, but leaves a lace which clings to the sides of the glass.
S- Doesn't have an overwhelming smell. Maybe a faint aroma of glenmorangie aged in sherry casks..or was hat jsut a hint of scotch and raspberries/sour cherry?
T- tastes very much like a scotch ale, with a fruited finish (cherry, raspberry.) Not tremendously complex, but good at what it it. I've gotta say, no usually a huge fan of this style, but this is a pretty fresh interpretation.
M- Nicely sharp around the tongue, and a bit of bitter residue, but overall good.
D- Great! Nice balance.

Cask at the brewery. Apparently JW Red soaked oak chips were added in the cask along with a splash of straight JW Red.

Pours a hazy brownish-red color with a one-finger off-white head - the head is larger than I've become accustomed to expecting from their casks. It recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of caramelized malts with a hint of scotch. I haven't had JW Red in quite some time, but if I remember correctly there wasn't a whole lot of peat quality and that's reflected here - it's more sweet than earthy.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Caramelized malts with a hint of toffee that are soon joined by sweet scotch flavors. The ending is mildly bitter with a hint of citrus hops.

Mouthfeel is good. I was surprised by the amount of carbonation, and the thickness was good.

Drinkability was good. I finished my first sample quickly and went for another. If certain moods I could see myself drinking a lot of this.

Overall this was a very interesting beer. I'm interested to try the regular version to see to what extent the changes made to the flavors and aroma. Cheers to Sweetwater for venturing into new territory.

Made it to this release for the Taco Mac 30th Anniversary at the SW Brewery. Kegs of the actual Scotch Ale will be available only in March, and only at Taco Mac. Poured a deep reddish tinted, copper color, with a fairly frothy, 2 finger head. Head slowly fades with some lacing left around the glass. A nice warm scent of sweet malts mixed with a hint of that JW scotch, it was served a little cold, so I kept smelling as I drank and the brew warmed, resulting in these traits becoming more apparent. Some hop aroma even entered the scent, which is rare for a scotch ale, in my experience. Really enjoyed the flavor, far more complex than the scent indicated. There is a nice upfront sweet chocolate malt flavor, that warms in the mouth, due to the alcohol, and scotch hints that were added to the cask version. Once again, the hops added a nice, but slight, bite in the aftertaste. I really enjoyed this scotch ale, and happily had a second taste. Makes me wonder if Sweetwater might entertain the idea of making a more readily available scotch ale somewhere down the road.
