Cask at Cypress St. Pint and Plate. This is the winner of the People’s Choice at Sweetwater’s Brew your Cask Off, the second year in a row Cypress has won. Re-brewed for the restaurant. Brewed with cocoa nibs and an entire pumpkin pie.

Pours one shade from black with a large-bubbled brown head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with large amounts of milk and dark chocolate. Also present are solid amounts of pumpkin-esque spices, cinnamon and nutmeg with hints of deeper vegetal notes. Finally, hints of vanilla round things out.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Lightly roasted malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by equal amounts of dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and vanilla. Midway through the sip moderate amounts of pumpkin character – mostly spices but with hints of actual pumpkin, as in the aroma – work their way into things. The vanilla and light roast take over near the end of the sip, carrying through to a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It’s got a very nice thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this is one of the better pumpkin stouts I’ve come across, although admittedly they’re few and far between. Well done and well worth a shot if you’re lucky enough to happen across it.
