House of Brews in Mt Pleasant is what most would call off the beaten path. Once you you arrive and get past the "hey is this someones house?" moment you realize just how great this place is.

The owner and operator is extremely friendly and helpful. Even though he was stocking their most recent shipment he made ample time to chat about beer. Four taps currently but as of julybthey are shifting to 8. Glassware is provided, no more plastic, and their are glasses to purchase, although a bit pricey IMHO. Taps are available to fill growlers or pint glasses to drink there. A decent selection of beer is cold that an be bought and drank on site for no additional charge(nice!).

The selection is spread out according to style and organized by brewery within style. They are bedrooms converted to their new purpose of beers shelves(love it). Their selection is quite good and their prices are very competitive though a smidge higher than CBX on the items I price compared. Great people and great beer experience to be shared by all (someone let me sample a RR Sanctifiction they brought in).

Just a great out of the way place where you can enjoy a cold pint and find some great beer. Do yourself a favor and stop by. Trust me you will be glad you did. Next time I'm in town I know I will again.

Been to 44 states and probably over 100 breweries and 100 beer stores and this is one of my favorites. A beer store that was orientated by rooms in a house... imports one room, craft another room, a bar in another room, live entertainment at times and staff that can't be beat. Allowed opening of beers on location to share and also did some trades with others. I want to say this was my favorite beer store ever, but I would have to think more about that before I make that statement. If I go back to Charleston this will be the first place I will go. Perfect score.

An interesting last stop on the road out to Sullivans island. Behind the hair shop and hotdog stand, also in former homes. Had some time to kill while waiting for my parents to arrive in town at noon, stopped in here at 10:30 since they opened at 10 per their website. Sign on the door says 10, apparently not opening until 11 this day. I was a little annoyed, but am only reflecting this in the service score. Service from the gentleman was fine other than this though.

Front room has the cooler and some newer releases, back to "bedrooms" had bottles separated by style. Plenty of variety local, micro, import alike. Nice draft selection, mostly harder to find stuff, for growler and on site consumption. Seats inside and the fenced in backyard offer a nice place for some drinks. If I was a local I could see myself stopping here very often. Though the sign also said they don't stay open very late.

The comparisons to CBX are a little carried away, but this is a fine stop away from the historic region. I felt no need to travel into the CBX after stopping here.

In a great beer city like Charleston, House of Brews is undoubtedly my favorite place to relax and indulge.

A - As laid back of an atmosphere as you could find. Privacy fence surrounding the bacyard with ample picnic tables and other varities of seating. Live music is standard on weekends, fires are frequent in the cooler months and friendly dogs and children are always welcome. Cornhole and 2x4 jenga is always there to enjoy.

Q - Quality? Isn't that covered? (Quality of atmosphere, quality of service, quality of slection, quality of food) I don't understand this one, but they are all fantastic.

S - Rob is as friendly and enjoyable a bartender you could have. Prompt, great knowledge and passion for beer, could make friends with anyone. I guess Andy is ok too..

S - The selection on site is truly unmatched, with a cooler full of all different styles of beer, 8 taps (pints, pitchers and growlers) - always a nice variety, never the same keg back to back, and 2 full bedrooms stocked to the ceiling with brews of all sorts (many harder to find gems) he has something for everyone. (Over 800 varities for there or to go).
HoB also carries Tea and Cigars. Shirts, hats and various glassware are also carried.

F - Although food is not served (other than chips and nuts) Rob welcomes bringing food in from elsewhere and occasionally has foodtrucks and the like post up in the parking lot.

V - As much as a love all facets of HoB the value is not surpassed by any. If you're looking to by retail is pretty middle of the pack, many brews are cheaper than they would be at CBX and a few are more expensive but pricing is certainly competetive. The greatest value is in on-site consumption. Where else can you drink a $1.99 Westbrook IPA, a $2.75 Sculpin, or a $6.99 bomber of Coast on site? The coolor (and retail in the bedrooms) is a fantastic value - If I'm staying for a while I'll throw some goodies in the coolor and drink world class beer at retail price on site. I love it, you'll probably see me there (at least once) for some period of time almost every week. And I live ~25 miles out of the way.

When I travel to new cities this is the type of place I look for. A small house like beer store with some nice rotating taps. Rob the owner is well versed and beyond friendly. We talked beer for a while, made a trade, and enjoyed some quality brews. Both times I went I also met some great friendly locals. Brought the wife who enjoyed it as well. I know CBX gets all the kudos but I will take HOB over them anytime.

Frequent House of Brews quite often. Favorite place to purchase or drink beers in Charleston. 8 rotating taps, never two kegs back to back. Large cooler of cold beers, over 700 in the back two rooms. There is open mic on the weekends, large backyard, pet and child friendly. Although there is no food served, you can always bring your own or there are plenty of delivery options close by. The owner Rob is incredibly knowledgeable all the products he carrys. He also has a fantastic selection of hot teas.

A: Definitely an unusual place - it used to be a house in its former life and it shows. There's a small bar with four taps and a cooler with a fair amount of beers. Also has a big yard with lots of chairs in the back. In addition to selling beer, they also sell tea, chips, pork rub, and peanuts (an interesting mix). An inviting, if somewhat odd atmosphere. The store part of the place is divided into two rooms, with a huge amount of bottled beer. The only problem is that they're divided up according to style (arranged alphabetically) and not laid out in straight alphabetical order.

Q: A pretty high level of quality here. There are a couple of bad beers clogging up the shelves, but that's to be expected.

S: The bartender seemed friendly and on top of things, though I didn't quiz him on the beer selection.

S: A massive selection of beer. I tried a Van Steenberge Monk's Cafe. Lots of beers on the shelves: Allagash, Stone, Mikkeller, Nogne, Westbrook, Hebrew, Stillwater, etc. As I said, there is some junk beer there, but it's in the minority. Also, they had Rogue Good Chit Pilsner, Reissdorf Kolsch, and Stillwater Stateside on tap (one irritating thing: they don't have any glassware; it's all poured into plastic cups).

V: While I wouldn't call this place cheap, but the prices are competitive. Pretty good prices for what you get.

Overall, this is a slightly strange place with a good selection of beer. If I lived in Mt Pleasant, I'd probably come here a lot more.
