Can (2013)

Acquired via trade
Thanks, wagenvolks and xpimptastikx!

A tasty IPA from Texas. Somewhat maltier and sweeter than I'm used to, but this is a fine beverage for a scorching hot day--they have them in Texas and we're having our share now in Southern California! Well crafted, easily drinkable, decent passion/tropical fruit hop notes in the aroma and flavor along with moderate bitterness. Crushed the can, easily.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a standard pint.

A: Hazy, dark, golden hue. Pours a 1+ finger, foamy, white head. Settles slowly leaving peaks of dry residue. Sticky spider web lacing.

S: Pine resin, orange citrus, grapefruit, and a little honey.

T: Shallow pine, lots of grapefruit, and paper.

M: Crisp, light, and bitter. Pungency lingers on the palate.

D: Can be consumed session style, but maybe a little too bitter for all that.

Atmosphere is pretty strong. Great hue, really nice head, and some strong lacing. Nose is characteristic of the style, but well executed... citrus, pine, and honey. Flavor is a little shallow, but plenty of pine and grapefruit. A little paper-y. Overall, this is a good quaff.

Caught this one on tap at Katy Trail Icehouse in Uptown Dallas.

Pours a deep golden, hazy orange body with good lacing and a thick beige head.

Big pine nose with citrus and heavy spice, very inviting.

Heavy citrus and pine but there's also a bready malt presence with honey, followed by a clean earthy finish. Very complex and full of flavor

Creamy mouthfeel with medium carbonation and body. Very drinkable.

Having not been in Dallas too long, this is my first taste of Deep Ellum despite all I've heard of them. Very good IPA, I'm looking forward to see what else they have to offer after I have a few more of these today.

12 oz can into a teku. Thanks Cody! Pours a hazy orange body with a finger of white foam. Really nice lacing and retention. Aroma is orange juice heavy with a dry powdery note on the finish. Bitter and very citric with just a touch of crackery malts. Taste is similar with loads of juicy oranges and a dry chalky thing that I also get in fresh Maine Lunch. Finishes with biscuity malts and a very low level of bitterness. This is a damn good IPA and I'm glad its not a huge bitter bomb. Extremely juicy with a pleasing level of malts and a powdery dry finish. Awesome!

Can poured into stemmed beer glass

Deep golden bordering on orange with an off white/yellow head that is quite dense. The pine scent is heavy with some spice. The taste is creamy with the huge head that has solid retention. Loads of bittering hops in this. Pine mostly. Solid IPA. True NW style.

Got in a trade with Cyde. 12 ounce can into tulip glass, no canning date. Pours very hazy and cloudy orange amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, tangerine, orange rind, lemon zest, orange zest, pineapple, floral, grass, honey, bread, light pine, and floral earthiness. Outstanding aromas with big citrus hop complexity with a moderate malt balance; and nice strength. Taste of big grapefruit, orange zest, tangerine, orange rind, lemon zest, pineapple, floral, pine, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness. Good amount of pine resin bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes citrus, citrus zest, citrus rind, floral, pine, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity and balance of citrus/floral/pine hop flavors; with a fair amount of malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a fairly creamy and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent IPA! Great hop flavor complexity and moderate malt balance; and very easy to drink. A highly enjoyable offering.

12 oz. can poured into tulip

L: cloudy but not fully opaque gold with some amber in it; head is huge, over an inch of white foam that sticks hard; keeps a fantastic skin and collar of foam but doesn't lace much on the way down

S: big grapefruit ... as it warms, a little of everything shows up -- caramel, mango, pine, grass; but it's grapefruit first and foremost. pine might be second with everything else a very distant third.

T: big bitter up front with a mostly grapefruit note peeking through

F: solid, a bit watery after big pour but nothing off-putting

O: a Texas-made grapefruit bomb! I love it. It's not a sweet mangled mess of caramel like so many IPA/DIPAs. no born-on date, so i can't say for sure how fresh this one is, but hopefully I can keep getting this one in this kind of shape because it's awesome.

Fantastic last time I had it but I was told that the whole crew that started it just bailed last week so it might be going downhill. Not sure if this will actually have any effect on the taste but I would try it as soon as possible just to be sure!!!
