Served in a tulip glass.

Color is a hazy straw yellow. Pours with a big foamy head that leaves a nice lacing behind.

Not a lot to this one one the nose.

Very distinct rye flavor, with a little sweetness from the malt. It'd a pleasant tasting beer, not a lot of complexity though.

A little more substantial in the mouth than I'd have expected from a pilsner, but still has nice snap to it.

Overall a pretty decent beer, but not one I'd go out of my way to get again. Would probably enjoy this more on a hot summer's day.

12 oz. can poured into pilsener

L: slightly murky orange; about 90% clear; very small head, maybe 1/4-inch that disipates quickly and doesn't stick

S: grainy with a hint of malt sweetness; the grain really stands out ... milo, corn, lightly toasted barley

T: a good bit of malt sweetness (bread, yeast, sweet biscuits) pushed into a grainy taste spiced strongly by the hops ... it's a pilsener, no question -- the spicy hops are a constant presence and seem to show up as much on the back end as anything. the grain here is often corn. ocasionally get a bit of a grassy taste from the hops.

F: soft but still plenty good ... there's plenty of carbonation, and the brew doesn't feel watery, but there's just something "soft" about it; it's not bad at all, and if anything this "softness" does make it easy going down

O: you could do so much worse, but this Deep Ellum brew has puzzled me -- the first two cans off the six-pack had me wanting to wake up the neighbors, call friends and family, maybe start a website devoted solely to the Rye Pils; honestly, it was THAT good and in every category. but as i've gotten down to this last can, the pour doesn't pop as much, the smell is a bit muted, and while the taste is still very solid, the feel seems completely off from what i first thought was a 5.

i bought and drank the whole six-pack inside of two weeks, so freshness shouldn't be an issue (bought the six-packs at the big Spec's in midtown Houston, so as i say: freshness shouldn't be an issue). whatever it is, it might be more me than anything.

bottom line: it's a solid brew. not a world-beater but definitely worth the pennies if you're looking for a Texas-made German pilsener.
