12 oz. can poured into pilsener

L: slightly murky orange; about 90% clear; very small head, maybe 1/4-inch that disipates quickly and doesn't stick

S: grainy with a hint of malt sweetness; the grain really stands out ... milo, corn, lightly toasted barley

T: a good bit of malt sweetness (bread, yeast, sweet biscuits) pushed into a grainy taste spiced strongly by the hops ... it's a pilsener, no question -- the spicy hops are a constant presence and seem to show up as much on the back end as anything. the grain here is often corn. ocasionally get a bit of a grassy taste from the hops.

F: soft but still plenty good ... there's plenty of carbonation, and the brew doesn't feel watery, but there's just something "soft" about it; it's not bad at all, and if anything this "softness" does make it easy going down

O: you could do so much worse, but this Deep Ellum brew has puzzled me -- the first two cans off the six-pack had me wanting to wake up the neighbors, call friends and family, maybe start a website devoted solely to the Rye Pils; honestly, it was THAT good and in every category. but as i've gotten down to this last can, the pour doesn't pop as much, the smell is a bit muted, and while the taste is still very solid, the feel seems completely off from what i first thought was a 5.

i bought and drank the whole six-pack inside of two weeks, so freshness shouldn't be an issue (bought the six-packs at the big Spec's in midtown Houston, so as i say: freshness shouldn't be an issue). whatever it is, it might be more me than anything.

bottom line: it's a solid brew. not a world-beater but definitely worth the pennies if you're looking for a Texas-made German pilsener.

A straw- colored brew, Rye Pils pours out of the can to a generally clear body and offers a nose of rye and floral notes. It is nothing extreme and is rather pleasant and appealing.

This beer has a nicely balanced taste with flavors of rye, pale malt, lightly spiced hops/pepper, bread/biscuits, and fruit. The beer is very session- like, easy- going, and agreeable. There is some graininess and some grassy hops too, with a flavor profile that is rye accented but not overdone in any way.

I like this Deep Ellum brew for many reasons and find it more than acceptable and likeable for most consumption purposes. Casual beer consumers and craft beer lovers alike will both enjoy this product- perhaps for different reasons, but all will enjoy it. Make it a point to try it if you can- it’s a good- tasting, refreshing and crisp beer with much to offer.

Served in a pint at brewery during a Saturday afternoon tour. This guys know how to do it up right. One of my favorite "tours" yet.

Color is a hazy yellow-orange. Smell slightly malty sweet with lemon and orange quickly following and a waft of herbal hops. Subtle apple to the tongue which is backed up by notes of rye and citrus. Clean as hell and light-to-medium bodied.

Is hard to beat some straight forward goodness like this.
