This Single Hopped Pale Ale is built on an English malt base of Golden Promise, 2-Row malted barley, and Caramalt to allow the hop qualities to shine through. The zesty bitter orange peel qualities of Styrian Golding hops are balanced by the English malt base, offering a slightly spicy, assertive, herbal, and dry finish.

I am working diligently to eradicate The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody & my efforts are not helped by new bottles showing up to replace ones that I have already drank & reviewed. It may seem a petty complaint, but it keeps me from the finish line. Onward!
From the bottle: "Explore Our Craft * Taste Enlightenment"; "Hop Odyssey Limited Release Series"; "Epic Journey Limited Release"; "We believe in hop experimentation, constantly exploring new varietals, fresh combinations and innovative brewing methods. Our passion for hops presents infinite possibilities. Embark on an epic journey with each Hop Odyssey (tm) release, and discover unexpected brews to inspire and enlighten your palate."; "Adventurously hoppy"; "Delicate notes of earth & citrus shine through a British malt backbone"; "100% Styrian Golding hops"; "40 IBU".
I Pop!ped the cap & began a gentle pour as befits my newfound enlightenment. Once sufficiently decanted, I gave it an in-glass swirl to raise nearly three fingers of foamy, rocky, French Vanilla-colored head with decent retention that left nice lacing in its wake. Color was a slightly hazy solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9). The orange zestiness of the nose was really stunning! It was beautifully underlain by a light caramel sweetness & my mouth began to water. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, kind of big for the style. The taste, while remaining orangey, was quite bitter and pithy with the earthiness of the malt kind of intensifying the bitterness. As a hophead, I appreciate the opportunity to try these single-hop beers, but with some varietals, it becomes clear that they need an accompaniment of some stripe. This was one of those instances. Once I had a feel for the citrusy earthiness, I felt satiated, but I was still faced with half of the bottle to be drank. Finish was undeniably dry and while I usually prefer dry beers, this was approaching the level of liquefied alum. It was just a bit too dry and bitter, especially for an APA, IMHO. YMMV.

I am not intrigued by the somewhat harsh and earthy taste but the aroma is sublime with its sweet oranges and herbal spicyness. The rest is not bad either. Glad to have this experience with Styrian Golding. (For those who wonder why a hop is considered Slowenian but called Styrian. Styria nowadays a province of Austria used to be much bigger during the times of the Austrian empire.)

12oz bottle from the variety case - imperial nonic glass
First had this on 10/10/15
Light caramel color body with some mild cloudy haze to it. Massive and dense khaki tan suds. Exhibits some incredible hang time that plasters up my glass a with sticky lace. The hops leap forward presenting candied orange peel with herbs and spices. Base bready English pale malt comes through with a light toasted caramel note. A touch of stone fruit and some solid earthiness there as well. Flavor is an interesting mix of tangerine peel, light earthy pine, kitchen spices, some assorted grasses and minty herbals. Balanced with a good tote of bready malt, orchard fruit, and a mild caramel-honey like sweetness. Has a reserved bitterness overall and no alcohol to report. Moderate to lower body with a nice frothy texture and good drying in the finish. Fairly clean overall.
This came better than expected. Was actually intrigued by this citrusy Styrian Gold single hop offering.
