12oz bottle. I picked this up in Austin, Texas about a month ago, as I've been coming to appreciate the efforts of San Diego-area brewers' take on the West Coast IPA style.
This beer pours a hazy, dark medium rusty orange-amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, bubbly, and yet still creamy ecru head, which recedes after a few minutes, leaving some decent roiling storm cloud lace around the glass.
It smells of pungent, if a tad overripe grapefruit and orange rind, lemon zest, a touch of musty dank, and a prominent sweet caramel and toffee malt. The flavour starts out pretty much the same, with a heavy dose of bittersweet citrus hops - grapefruit, orange pith, a sort of isolated squishy lemon essence, a hint of murky mint, and heady bready caramel malt, the toffee sweetness quietly having bled off. A further leafy and pine hop develops as it warms, as does evidence of the north of 7 points of alcohol.
The carbonation is quite light, manifesting in just a wee prickly frothiness, the body a sturdy medium weight, and so-so smooth as the hops seem to shine through on their own here. It finishes barely off-dry, the hops still wanting everyone to know who's in charge in this particular set of zip codes.
I find I'm drinking this rather quickly, it's so tasty, and alas, I've got only the single bottle. Overall, this is definitely a winner for the hopheads who like at least a modicum of balance in their IPAs, myself included.

Clear, amber body. Decent amount of head and retention. Juicy, fresh hop aroma with a fairly large caramel malt backbone. Taste is a little bit more malt than I was expecting. Good carbonation.
Have no idea when this was bottled. Seems to be pretty fresh though. A very solid west coast style IPA. Not sure how it stacks up to the old recipe.
