Finally well enough to crack open one of these. The top of the bottle neck states that this is best by "03/13/14," although I do remember their beers having bottling dates not too long ago. Still, what's a better way to clear my sinuses than with what's purportedly considered to be the dankest IPA of its kind? Poured into a tulip glass from a 12oz bottle.

With an aggressive pour, this yields a cloudy, copper tinged amber color complete with about 3 fingers of sticky, frothy foam that dissipates rather quickly (although not without leaving plenty of sticky lacing in its wake and a half finger of head at the finish). For a 7.3% ABV IPA, carbonation is relatively high, despite a major lack of bubbles floating upwards. Looks thick and sticky, and really reckons itself as the black sheep of West Coast IPAs even here.

I've had this several times in my life, and really nothing comes close to this IPA in terms of maintaining an extreme, dank, herbal hoppy profile of this nature. Pine and clove (to the point of becoming medicinal), grapefruit, pineapple, and orange peel. Contains a funky pear aroma underneath, with a bit of earthiness and spices. Very prickly, even here - reminds me of a big bowl of sage and fennel at times. Contains a slight sweetness from the malts, even producing a bit of toffee or caramel, but this will raise the hair on the chest of even some of the most experienced of hopheads.

Dear God! Could a beer get more astringent than this in flavor? It probably could, but I'm not sticking around to think twice about it. This is by far the dankest herbal IPA I've probably had to date. At first, there's an immediate pungent force of dried grapefruit rinds, orange and lemon peel, and lots of under ripe pineapple. Then, it becomes progressively vegetal and herbal, with notes of green pepper, sage, saffron, lemongrass, light anise, and lots of toasted tobacco at the finish. As a former pipe tobacco smoker, this contains the same astringency and toasted herbal notes that better quality tobacco holds, and the cornucopia of herbs and intense citrus and tropical notes makes this an intense IPA to be reckoned with. Some heat is noticeable, but the sweetened caramel malt profile does its best to hide it. And, despite the beer's near palate-wrecking astringency, it's creamy enough to make it a an easy sipper.

Green Flash makes its big beers, but this is one I'm always hesitant about trying due to its obvious intensity. Make no mistake, this is an impressive West Coast take on the style, but it's so different from the usual offering in so many ways. Due to its extreme bitter profile, it's far from balanced or applicable for everyday drinking in my routine. Nevertheless, it's a perfect example of Green Flash doing what they do best - getting the hop profile, turning it up to 11, and somehow make it drinkable throughout. Recommended for those wanting more intense hoppy beers.
