Beer #24 in my 366 Days of Beer Quest, tasted on 1/24. This finally arrived at my local beerstore, been wanting to try for awhile now...

A: Dark copper body into a tulip glass. A big, healthy tan head retains extremely well, w/ a nice cake of foam left on top. Thousands of yeasties float in the body; sticky lacing.

S: This positively reeks of citrusy, piney hops in the W.C. style and practically fills the room with aromatic hop oils. A bit of caramel & biscuity malts balance the alphas, but barely.

M: Light-med. body, nice bit of carbonation. Very soft and creamy. Nice.

T: This is a fantastically hopped IPA. A lasting bitterness clings on as well as grapefruit, pine and woody hops. Big biscuity malts and spicy, peppery yeast round it out, yet the hops always come back in the end.

D: A hoppy, fantastic IPA, similar to Harpoon's Finest Kind, IMO. It's the hopheads' IPA, yet still has just enough sweet malt balance. Very dry finish, this would be awesome w/ any spicy food. Buy a case.

Poured into a snifter.

Appearance. Orange tinted honey in color. A thin haze tints the beer. After a slow pour there is 3 fingers of head that slowly dissipates leaving a thick sticky lacing on the side of the glass. a nice thick frothy layer of head remains.

Smell. Huge bursts of grapefruit and blood orange. Some medicinal qualities as well. A bready malt lies underneath this.

Taste. Starts out wiht a dry citrus hop presence, with the grapefruit and orange that was present in the smell. Bitterness cuts this, but is not cloying. It remains for the rest of the time. After the begining of the bitterness the flavor takes on a more distinct herbal hop flavor. A dry bitter and citrus finish leaves the palate refreshed and ready for more.

Mouthfeel. Surprisingly thick body, with moderate prickly carbonation.

Other than the substantial bitterness this one is surprisingly restrained.

The beer is an orange-ish hue with a decent head for an IPA. It smells great with a bit of sweetness and fruit of which I can't put my finger on. The taste is hoppy, as you'd expect from an IPA, and starts off with a fruity note equating to the smell. The aftertaste is what strikes me as very 'off' with this one. It keeps its hops all the way through, which is great; however towards the end of the sip I'm hit by an intense metallic and soapy flavor that ruined the experience for me. I've noticed several bad IPAs having this aftertase, just not quite this prevalent. It seemed to have the makings of a great IPA before this point.

I'm thinking perhaps I got a bad barrel, but I will likely never know as I won't be giving this another try from the tap.

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours a very hazy deep orange color with a 2 finger head and very nice lacing. Ideal!

S: Tons of fragrant citrus, pine, and floral hops along with a nice malt presence. After further review, I'm also getting some hints of vanilla.

T: Just like the smell, there are tons of various hop flavors balanced with some sweet caramel flavored malts. Hides the alcohol well. Mild metallic flavor in the aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate carbonation.

O: This is a very well balanced and flavorful IPA. Easy to drink and quite refreshing. Maybe the best lacing I've seen on an IPA. The name says it all...this is a true West Coast IPA.

A - Pours a hazy, orange-tinged amber color with one finger of white head. Nice retention and lacing.

S - Very hop forward, with grapefruit and pine aromas as well as tropical fruit and dank, herbal qualities. Hint of malt in the background.

T - Piney, citrus hops with a fairly strong bitterness. Some floral, grassy, herbal hop qualities come through after the initial bitterness subsides. Balanced with some sweet, slightly biscuity malt that makes itself known, but lets the hops do most of the talking. Finish is nice and dry, and leads into a lingering herbal and piney aftertaste.

M - Medium body with a crisp carbonation that helps balance out the fairly resinous hops.

D - Great hop flavor and intensity with just enough malt to lend a bit of balance. Enjoyed this one a lot, and will definitely revisit it in the near future.

On tap at Puckett's downtown.

A: clear, red with a finger of white head. Not much lacing but I am drinking it from a mason jar so who knows for sure.

S: no shortage of pungent hops here. Heavy citrus and floral scent.

T: clean crisp and hoppy. They didn't hold back on the hops at all with this one. Dry. Grassy and earth, very good.

M: pretty light overall, somewhat thin. Great consistency given the quality of the hop flavor.

O: glad we just got this in Nashville. Perfect timing for summer. Will buy again.
