12 oz bottle into a pint glass. I can't tell you how long I've wanted to try a fresh bottle of this.

A: Pours a clear copper color. The head is three fingers tall, with a bubbly off-white shade. While the retention is only pretty good, it leaves behind webs of lacing on the glass.

S: Oh yes, this is as hoppy as I wanted it to be. There seems to be a combination of many different hop profiles: some tropical fruit, more general citrus, powerful floral notes, Centennial-derived lemongrass, and (of course) pine. They all seem to gel together quite well. Malts are nearly imperceptible - and thank God for that!

T: The malt backbone has a little more say down on the flavor profile. There is a gentle opening bitterness (mainly floral), but the finish is...actually sort of malty. Sure, there's some definite Centennial poking around the back end, but I'm getting a lot of caramel, toffee, and brown sugar - even some mild esters. I wish some more tropical fruits and less floral bitterness came through, otherwise there isn't really anything to complain about. It's even somewhat complex, a rarity for the style.

M: While this isn't a bone dry beer, it's still really crisp on the back end. Come to think about it, this becomes kind of sweet after a while (forgivable for a DIPA, though). For sure, it drinks faster than I'd expect something 8.1% normally would. Carbonation is well concealed by the borderline syrupy body.

O: I would gladly buy this again...if I ever saw it fresh. As a reference, for the two and a half years I've been drinking beer, today is the first time I've EVER seen this one in a fresh state. That's worrying. And it seems Green Flash stopped dating bottles. That's doubly worrying. I hope it doesn't take another two and a half years to find a fresh batch of this beer again, because it's really damn delicious right now.

New 2014 recipe
12 oz bottle poured into a shaker pint.

Golden-amber with 1 finger of soft, bone-white head with good retention. Very lively carbonation and excellent clarity. Creamy lacing is left on the side of the glass.

Pink grapefruit, florals, dank greens, lemon, caramel, and sugar coated oranges. Hint of mango.

The pink grapefruit is off the charts! Sugar coated orange and lemon wedges. Bright florals and a spicy, earthy dankness. A firm caramel backbone balances the bitterness.

Medium bodied, smooth, and creamy with a nicely balanced bitterness.

Super-classic West Coast taste. The 8.1% goes down incredibly easy.
