Tasting sample pours a dark orange-red with a big, fluffy off-white head. Retention and lace are superb.
Being a red IPA, the nose carries a big breadiness with citrussy touches of grapefruit and lemon blossom. There's some serious phenolics going on here, getting in the way of what I think should be a more complex bouquet. Those phenols also carry an unfortunate aroma that's akin to when you slam on your breaks too hard and your tires squeal, leaving that nose-tickling aroma of slightly burnt rubber. Then shake some black pepper on top of that. Not good, but it does only sit in the background. I can look past it a little, but the beer still loses major points.
Palate is medium bodied with toasty bready malt and a bitterness about half as big as the West Coast, exchanging it out for a bit of malty juiciness. The brew has that same hop slick/smoothness as the WC, and unfortunately the same phenolics as the nose getting in the way of other flavors, leaving just some bread and vague grapefruit on the juicy finish.
Overall, it already takes a lot for a Red IPA to win me over, and to add a flavor that tastes like car tires squealing just takes it in a worse direction. It could be worse tho, at least that character is a secondary and not primary flavor.
