Green Flash Hop Head Red.

If there is one brewery that has one me over recently it is these ladies and gentleman of good ole California. This was the one I went back for the next day after having three of their other brews. Let us hope the legacy lives on.

Look - Everything they promise they seem to deliver. This is oneeee red fucking beer haha. Poured deep, blot clot red with a one finger white head thag doesn't fully retain though stays relevant with a continent formation all around the top of the swill. Cannot get a good read on the carbonation. Lacing isn't there but it is still attractive. 4.

Smell - Holy fucking toffee candy bat man. This thing smells like a heath bar infused with maltiness and a dank hop background. That's all we got going on here folks. 4.

Taste - Yep the toffee aspect remains. Very toasty, and I mean VERYYYY toasty maltiness melds with the toffee flavoring. The hops aren't exactly all that present in this one. I get a bit of the sweet juicy bite but overall this is a sweet, heath bar esque malt bomb with a touch of flowery aspects. 4.

Feel - The body is quite large though not exactly heavy. Carbonation seems pretty high and it is slightly creamy. Not much else to say about the feel on this one. 4.

Overall - While it is probably my least favorite in the bunch I've tried from Green Flash, that isn't saying a whole lot. It is still a very solid beer and truly one of the most sessionable reds I have ever had. Almost too sessionable actually. Sometimes I wonder if I have a drinking problem..haha. I've had better in the style, at higher ABV's. Think of this as a Red half light. 4. (1,634 characters)

A-Definitely a human redhead in the sense of an orange amber color, you can see hop sediment floating around. Off-white head that lingers.
S-Big hit of caramel/crystal malt on the nose. Some hop aroma in the dank/pine spectrum
M-Medium body with medium carbonation
T-Nice mid-level bitterness. Malt forward with caramel/crystal dominating.
O-A nice ale, that composes a couple of dimensions nicely. Better than the average. (426 characters)

Had on tap at Kay's Bar in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood of Portland, OR

Sports a deep amber hue with a formidable creamy white head with superb retention.

Aromas were somewhat more muted than I would have hoped. Was expecting giant aromas of orange and pine, but got little more than a flutter.

Incredibly well balanced despite a hefty 8.1% ABV. Flavors of caramel malts were balanced with a a pleasant, but not overly bitter finish of hops.

And all-around great beer, just not something to write home to mom about. (532 characters)

Look: Hazy medium light red. Finger and a half of lightly tan head that sticks around. tiny amount of sediment. Slight lacing.

Smell: Amarillo is subtle but nice. Caramel malts.

Taste: Caramel has a little toast to it. Amarillo is a little resiney. Sweet on the front end progresses to roasty to fairly bitter on the finish. Well ballanced and very complex.

Feel: A little syrupy but finishes very dry. This thing does some interesting things in your mouth.

Overall: One of my favorite Reds. Bright, dry, sweet, bitter. This thing hits a bunch of different notes very quickly and very well. If you love reds this is one to grab. (632 characters)

I really liked this beer at first. After a while the overpowering hops got to me. I really like Green Flash brews and this one is a good one too, but I don't love it as much as I would like too. Great color, and aroma. The back of the throat as it is going down is good too. The after taste is a little too much. (317 characters)

This has a really good looking deep ruby like color with a a towering, dense off white head. The aroma has some citrusy, and fruitiness to it plus some some malt and booziness to it. The taste reflects this aswell but there is a little bit of an off putting taste in it, almost could be described as oniony but not exactly. Regardless it's pretty good though definitely going to look forward to drinking the other one I have, but I have definitely had some better hop forward red ales. (485 characters)

Appearance: Pours a brilliant mahogany red color.

Overall: Has a nice caramel malt flavor to start and culminates in a citrus, slighty hoppy finish. Great beer that has a perfect marriage of red ale and hops. Very good beer. Try it! (236 characters)

I don't know why this ale isn't rated higher. It is OUTSTANDING in all categories. I know what I'm talking about because I've been a home brewer since my high school & college days and have gotten numerous compliments on my brews. I had Green Flash for the first time tonight at Ditkas's (Big Mike) Restaurant in Oak Brook, Il, along with their finest 3/4 pound angus beef burger (the best in the midwest) with delicious hand cut fries. Believe me, the Green Flash ale will put all other ales to rest. It's strong, tasty without much hop bitterness & goes down smooth. And it's brewed in sunny San Diego. Try it, you'll love it! (628 characters)

A: The beer is a beauty to look at pouring a brilliant mahogany red under a 2” finely bubbled cream colored foam collar that hugs the side of the glass.
S: Resiny, floral, herbal, minty hop garden on the nose with traces of dank.
T: The hops are big, bold and righteous with the big malt and alcohols just barely hanging on. It all culminates in a snappy citrus rind finish.
F: Very creamy medium full body with medium to medium low carbonation.
O: Outrageously good. (473 characters)

Pours amber red with a slight haze and a small head with slight lacing. Big malt flavor that feels like it steps in front of the hops and isn't as well balanced as it could be. Still a very good brew. (201 characters)

Poured a nice dark golden brown color with a reddish hue. You couldn't see much light through the glass but you did see a lot of hop residue floating around. The smell is of hops and sweet caramel malts. You can really pick up the sweetness off of the aroma. The taste was very aggressive and hop forward as you would expect from a double IPA. The sweetness did play a nice role in this beer. It played well with the bitterness of the hops and made it finish smooth. This is a good beer! (494 characters)

Pours an amber transparent. Light carbonation. Smells a bit astringent with malty tones. Taste is an even throughout subtle malt with slight biscuity aftertaste. Taste gets slightly more malty with warming temps. Definite caramel finishing yet still more biscuity in my batch. Enjoyable beer. (293 characters)

Appearance is very nice. Musty red with a thick tan head that lasts and lasts.

Nose is spicy chicory, woodsy hops, and sweet milky malt.

Taste is simple and bold, with a strong wood flavor. The malt is subtle, which is surprising and nice. The hops provide a light burn at the end.

Mouthfeel is very full, soft, with a nice oil slickness. Carbonation is medium-mild and perfectly balanced. Beer doesn't feel much better than this.

Overall, this is a very well thought-out and well-made beer. (500 characters)

Redest red I've had.

Pours pure red, almost no head, but leaves legs on glass. Strong aroma with great taste to follow. Flavor lasts but doesn't linger. Leaves you wanting to not wait and taste again. Once u taste again you get hit with a Carmel taste since you are ready for it.

I am generally not a big Red Ale fan (too one note), but this one breaks the mold for me the same way DFH Indian Brown does for brown ales. Hop Head Red is still a red, nice amber rust color and sweet caramel malts on the nose and palate, but there is a great (and subtle) hop profile to add balance and complexity. Really nice. (330 characters)

The bottle better describes the style (double red ipa) than does the one listed on here (amber). Yes amber in color, but this brew is a serious ipa. Nice malted base flavors and good hops. (188 characters)

Deeply hoppy, complexed by the lightly carameled barley. I've had beer with a higher abu's not taste as hoppy as this beaut. Hoops are not incredibly citric or piney. It's a perfect balance in the bitterness profile. (216 characters)

Pours a lovely orange red with a good off white head. Big hop nose. Lots of floral notes with a faint fir note as well. Big hop bitterness from the very beginning. Lives up to every one of the 70 IBU's. A hint of caramel from the malt but not a lot. Finishes bitter and I agree with a previous reviewer's comment of an "iron-like" finish. (345 characters)

Pours a nice dark red, with a big creamy head.
S- Oh, bold.hops including the warrior hop that reminds me of their great Road Warrior.
T- Oh yeah. Much like the road warrior, but more malty goodness you get in a red. Carmel also brings all together.
F- Bold hops with the smoothness benefiting from the malt.
O- Green Flash continues to amaze me. They are becoming one of my top companies. I likey!!! (409 characters)

I Liked this beer a lot. The more I drink Green Flash the more I like their Beers. I could go on about mouthfeel or whatever but I tell you what. 10 bucks. 4 beers. Good luck finishing all 4. 3 and I was satisfied. Not many beers can do that. I love satisfaction and this beer delivers. (286 characters)

One of the best beers I've ever drank. Very balanced , fully hopped up and a perfect roasty maltiness to balance it out. The only knock is that it is so damn strong. Two of these and it's good night. You don't taste the alcohol but you sure feel it!! (250 characters)

Twelve ounce bottle poured into a snifter. There's no Best By date where the Best By date lettering is, which is annoying.

Great looking beer with a frothy, persistent oatmeal-colored head, and heavy lacing. Hazy dark amber body.

Potent nose offers dank, resinous and mildy sweet citrusy hops combined with a heavy dose of sweet caramel.

Very sweet and caramel-heavy at first, but successive sips bring out more of the hop profile. Floral and grassy mostly, the hops don't hold the same bright sweet citrusy flavors that the nose suggested.

For all the heavy sweetness this beer has to offer, it's also highly bitter. While the beer starts off with a thick mouthfeel, creaminess and a sprinkling of carbonation mid-palate, it exits with a long, dry bitterness.

Big on malt flavors and big on bitterness, this beer packs a lot of punch. It seems a bit overdone and it affects the drinkability, but there's still enough good flavor to enjoy this beer from time to time. (977 characters)
