This brew pours a beautiful opaque copper/orange with a two finger head which lasts for a while. Some of the head remains on the top of the brew until the end. Good lacing.

The smell is wheat, bananas and cloves. I don't smell too many hops here. Maybe some light piney hops. There is also a bubblegum/yeasty smell.

The taste is citrus hops, wheat, bubblegum, sweet malts and pine. There is also a 'musty' taste similar to what shows up in the smell.

The mouthfeel is thin and creamy, good carbonation. The brew leaves a dry taste in the mouth after swallowing and an oily taste on the tongue.

Overall this brew is pretty plain for something that is called "Le Freak" It does taste as advertised, a cross between a Trippel and an IPA; more Trippel than IPA.

Belgian IPA? Let's see what the fuss is. Bottled on 3/5/13, so freshness may be an issue.

A: Looking pretty standard so far. Off pale slightly hazy orange/copper. Two fingers khaki head. Dissipation is fairly rapid. Not much for lacing.

S: Aha! Banana/clove esters escape from the glass. Notes of bubblegum, all spice, some sweet /spicy fruitiness. Underneath is some milled grain. Not much hop presence noted.

T: Big spicy fruity notes in the beginning. The same clove, banana and candied fruit. Pretty quickly enveloped by a big wave of tropical cone bitterness that runs through the mid palate. The finish picks up again with the same zesty, spicy (all spice, grains of paradise/ coriander) This intermingles with the bitterness to leave a pleasant herbal soapiness and zesty, citrusy taste. Leafy/woodsy bitterness brings up the rear. Finish has a lot of apple with a zesty, lemony bitterness. Aftertaste of herbal green apple.

M: Light on its feet. Picks ups a little body mid palate, but finishes very refreshing. Very deceiving 9.2 abv. The alcohol gives some body, but not nearly the level one would think.

O: Impressive. Still not completely onboard with Belgian strains of yeast, but this is a good starting point.

12oz bottle found in the back of my cellar dated 10/22/12
A-Poured aggressively with a 2in white head. lots of micro bubbles being released from the center of the glass. Head retention in not very good, almost completely dissipated within 1 minute. leaves a small thin lacing.
S-Malt with what appears to belgian yeast and a light citrus nose.
T- Very malty with no sign of hops and a slightly spiced body.
M- Good carbonation with a solid mouthfeel.
O- Can definately tell that this beer has degraded a lot but it’s still a solid drink

A - Golden yellow and nearly transparent. Beautiful off-white head with great retention and lacing.

S - Bready and citrus, orange and grapefruit

T - Caramel base with strong spicy pine and grapefruit hops and tons of banana. Normally I am not a fan of the banana flavor that Belgian yeast imparts, but this is the most I've ever enjoyed. The high ABV and hops balance the flavor amazingly.

M - Crisp and clean with perfect carbonation. Very drinkable!

O - This is a new favorite. I'm not normally a fan of Belgians or Belgian/IPAs because of the yeast flavor profiles but the strong hops and dry hopping counterbalance this perfectly. I will definitely be enjoying this again.
