12 ounce goblet at Liar's Club in Mission Beach, San Diego

First taste was good, but then gets too sweet

Golden color with a 1/4 inch white head

Far too fruity with oranges taking over any other tastes

Tasted like Tropicana juice had been thrown into the mix with beer

People made a big deal out of this summer seasonal at the bar, but I could have done without it (369 characters)

Had this on tap at the Green Flash Brewery.

Look - light copper and clear. Looks more like a Pilsner than a saison.

Smell - yeasty, airy, and a little like PBR.

Taste - Light breadiness with some vanilla. A hint of straw and funk. Pretty flat and watered down as well. Honestly the beer tasted pretty bland and there was not a lot of positives to go on unfortunately. The (2) of us tasting it agreed the best take was PBR without the sharpness of an aluminum can.

Overall - The Rayon Vert (comparable to a Saison) is one of my favorite beers so with their actual Saison I was expecting something very dry & complex with bready funk. I was very disappointed with this beer because Green Flash is one of my favorite breweries and Saison is my favorite style. I only had it this once as a taster so maybe it was bottom of the keg and had gone flat. Or maybe this was supposed to be more of a 'starter' Saison marketed to the blue collar man's man. I will try this again in hopes that this time was an aberration and I was sorely mistaken. (1,040 characters)

on tap @ Hamilton's in San Diego, CA

A- hazy gold, elegant 1 1/2" white head, good retent, spotty and thin white lacing

S- floral, grainy, wheat

T- wet grain, strong wheat character, malt sweetness, simple, grassy

M- medium body, crisp, coarse from carbonation

D- does summer mean boring? decent at best. a good brewery shouldn't dumb down a good style for "summer" (380 characters)

Consumed 11/01/08 at Blue Palms, Hollywood, CA.

Cloudy light yellow beer in a tulip glass. For a head, only a thin ring of foam clings to the sides of the glass.

Powdery, estery, yeasty aroma. Slightly sweet. Touch of ginger.

Flavor is light, almost thin. A suggestion of yeasty bread flirts briefly with the palate before a a faint bitterness finishes up. Not as complex or fruity as expected or desired.

Still and thin in the mouth. More carbonation would probably do wonders for this beer.

As served, not a beer I particularly enjoyed. I'd be willing to try it again, though, to see if this was just on off batch or something. (635 characters)

From 22oz bomber to Bruges hybrid glass on 8/16/11
*From notes

This bottle was a gift from SirRuss last October, and has been in my cellar since. Cheers, Geez!

A: Clean at first pour, then cloudy as it gets to about the half way mark. It looks as it should: hazy hay-yellow. A two finger head which sticks around for some time is the product of a decent pour. Suitable lacing follows.

S: Like a wet towel left in the hot summer sun all day, then left to dry overnight. It's got a mustiness to it that it just can't shake. Hints of browning banana and crusted ginger are ever present, but the orange zest which it proclaims on the label is simply non-existent.

T: Again, the label states this to be fruit forward and showcasing crisp flavors of orange, ginger and so on. Sadly, it doesn't - this beer is just too remote for it's own good. Is it tasty? Sure, by standard saison standards, but by the lofty expectations set forth on the fugly label? Not so much. Lots of banana and green apple are the dominating flavors here, and they stick around from beginning to end.

M: Good stuff. It's rich and textured. The carbonation is well done, and the creaminess is where it should be.

O: For a standard saison, Green Flash's Summer Saison is above average. For a more unique take on a saison? Meh.

I've had this both fresh and now with some age, and I can tell you that the key flavor profiles you'd look for in this one are not there in either presentation. With some touching up in the offseason, I know Green Flash could make this one stunning brew.

(had this on draught at the brewery in Vista). Pours golden with thick white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is grassy, hay, spices. Taste is semi-sweet with some dry bitterness. Light bodied with thin and oily texture. Finish is bitter. This was ok, but I could see having it when it warms up here in Arizona and I'm in the mood for a saison. (336 characters)

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Opaque gold color with a billowing white head. Aroma is wheaty with some banana notes. Also some citrus, but a distinct lack of spiciness. Flavor is mainly banana pith and lemon meringue. Again, not really any spice. Comes off sweet and underattenuated. Good mouthfeel but this is really just a typically uninspired American attempt at a Belgian style. (385 characters)

Nice golden color some good lacing around the glass.

The aroma and flavor are pretty much what you expect from a saison: very fruity, spicy and dry. Plenty of apple notes, giving it a fresh feel. There is a faint taste of soap, but nothing too harsh. Very refreshing and sweet.

Another winner from Green Flash. (312 characters)

glass: Tulip

a: Hazy orange/melon color with a foamy 3+ finger head, lots, LOTS of small bubbles rushing to the top.

s: Lots of soft, bright fruit on the nose, apricot, peach, lemon. Soft cracker aroma underneath. Overtones of lemon peal, peppercorn and floral hops.

t: A lot of those characteristics translate to the taste, soft fruit but a noticeable banana and clove flavor is present along with the signature "funk" which comes off to me like some malt liquors would taste like. Finishes a bit bitter, with lemon peel and some dryness and floral hops.

m: medium-bodied with high carbonation

o: A bit to carbonated but overall nice. (640 characters)

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. A summer beer in the winter months but found this bottle noodling around in the back of a shelf as I was looking for a nice beer to go with roast chicken. Beer is a hazy pale golden color with two fingers of bright white foamy head. Head dissipates slowly, leaving some thick lacing along the inside of the glass, until a half finger collar of bubbly foam remain. Tons of carbonation streaming up from the bottom of the glass.

Nose is a light grains and biscuit malt, some light floral and citrus aromas and some fruity esters that remind me of green grapes and white peaches. Mild aromas overall.

Taking a sip, stronger floral and citrus flavors accompany the biscuit malts and fruity esters. Decently refreshing beer, finishing dry on the tongue with only light lingering floral flavors on the tongue.

Light body and effervescent, carbonation softly sweeps your tongue clean and dry. Easy drinking and refreshing saison. (961 characters)

Reviewed on 9/3/08. On tap at the Ginger Man. Pours a cloudy gold and wmall white head. Aroma of wheat, lots of spices. Flavor is wheaty with a spicy finish (pepper, clove). Somehow I had a feeling that this would taste a lot like the Southern Tier Cherry Saison and I was right. More wheat beer/hefe like than a saison, but it was tasty.

Taste - Grassy and herbal, spicy ginger and corainder, peppery notes, lots of fruity Belgian yeast. (288 characters)

Served in an imperial pint. Slightly hazy bright yellow with a 2-finger white head, retention was decent, not much lace left.

Smell/taste - Smell is a bit faint, but not bad, reminds me of a hefeweizen. Taste is also very hefeweizen - huge banana especially, clove/spice, lemon, citrus, yeast and some bread. Not much of a hop presence.

Nice mouthfeel, good body for 4.5%, carbonation is at a good place, easy drinking.

I did enjoy this, but didn't really feel like a saison at all, so I knocked some points off. (516 characters)

-yellow, and very clear as a non filtered beer would leave you to believe. crazy retention on that white head though. good amount of bubs to start

-bit of hay smell, some belgian yeast notes, and some minor background fruits

-not a big saison taste. there is a bit of lemony with some banana taste behind the yeast, but not as flavorful as i would like

-decent body for the abv, a bit dry and some bitter feel towards the end

-despite the lack of flavor a bit, i do enjoy it. it is a nice easy drinker and would never mind drinking this on a hot day (553 characters)

Glass - Tulip

A - A pretty clear straw color with lots of visible carbonation, and a 2-finger white head. The head retention seems to be decent, and I got some splotches left on my glass at the end.

S - Upfront is very noticeable grassy, lemon citrus and floral characteristics that almost comes off skunky. I also pick up soft cracker with banana and a touch of clove. Overall it smells citrusy and bright.

T - It's pretty astringent throughout. The first thing I get is lemon citrus and zests. Quickly following is soft cracker with banana and clove towards the finish. It finishes very dry and very astringent, with lite-moderate bitterness.

M - Highly carbonated with a tight champagne like crispness. Medium bodied.

O - I think the smell and the appearance are very inviting. I also liked the flavors of the beer, but I didn't like the high level of astringency and dryness of it. I felt that the carbonation was a bit to champagne like as well, and very filling. Overall I liked it but I wouldn't buy it again. (1,021 characters)

Saison Diego

A: Extremely pale in color resembling a golden clear lager.

S: Ginger and fruit spices caress the nose and dominate the senses

T:Tthis one is a very delicious farmhouse ale with unique complexity  of gingerbread, grassy flavors with a mix of light citrus.

M: This one is uniquely dry which i love. The carbonation is high, flavor is bold and the tongue craves more.

O: A delicious saison that i would love to pair with a food combo. Not my favorite style but a great beer overall. (499 characters)

I am going to assume that 'Saison Diego' is another name for the Summer Saison. If not, let me know.

A - Murky wheat, stark white large head. Lots of cascading bubbles. Some foamy lace.

S - Barny, small malt profile, spicy citrus.

T - Ginger and orange peel is definitely apparent in layers of this straw like, lightly funked beer.

M - Light, medium body, good carb, good balance.

D - Easy drinker for sure! (412 characters)

Pours an effervescent gold with a pinky of ivory colored head. Great head retention & pretty good lacing

S: Grassyness & mown hay, white pepper, plus grainyness

T: Follows the nose, a slight bit of yeasty twang, some lemony & a touch of band-aids up front. I do pick up some orange peels once this warms along with grainy notes, a touch of grains of paradise too & bit of grapefruit bitterness. Finishes grassy, crisp & with some serious bitterness derived from the orange peels

MF: Light/medium bodied, crisp carbonation

On the low end if the ABV scale, but probably more in line with what Belgian farmers were brewing & giving to their farm hands I'm sure, Very drinkable, but not terribly interesting (707 characters)

Pours with a nice head and a clear lighter gold color. Pungent with tones of oranges, spices, citrus tones and even some floral tones. Lighter on the palate, but not lacking at all. Smooth with more prominent spices. This is a real good domestic saison (252 characters)

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber into a New Belgium globe glass. Pours a golden hazed yellow with a thick and rather resilient cap of white foam. Looks good, and offers solid lacing throughout the glass.

Nose of light lemon and a bit of spice, yet pretty solid through the foam. Touch of Belgian-esque yeast is everpresent in a good way.

Flavor is bit muted however and offers a short finish. Decent but short and in fact a bit of a letdown given the pour. Pleasant nonetheless though lacking a bit in body for the style.

Overall a solid offering that might benefit from a bit more residual malt.. (595 characters)

22oz bottle into my Sierra Nevada glass. Golden yellow in color with a thin and bubbly white head to. Pretty nice lacing on the glass as I drank it.

The aroma has some crisp, pilsner like malts to it mixing with some Belgian yeast spice. I get a little clove to it out of the yeast. Some brighter, refreshing lemony citrus is present as well.

The taste shows a lot of the Belgian yeast spice throughout the flavor. Midway some of the sweeter grainy malts come through, while in the finish I get more of a bitter citrus rind presence.

The mouthfeel is light with carbonation being above average. Overall it was a pretty good beer, but not outstanding in the style. It was flavorful and pretty easy drinking but the spice and bitter citrus rind felt a little harsh at times. Overall an enjoyable beer though. (812 characters)

Bomber into a tumbler.

A : Pours a very bright gold with a inch tall white fizzy head, lots of carbonation bubbles rolling to the top.

S : Lots of yeast, peppery spices and a pinch of apricot note.

T : Spicey earthy taste, with a bit of a sweet maltiness. The apricot note from the smell is their, albeit even lighter than then.

M : A nice medium body, quite carbonated but with a smooth finish.

D : This one is gulpable, as a great summer beer should be. Fantastic to cool off on the hot day, but not the best of the style. (531 characters)

s- sweet tasting with fruity undertones. decent hop aroma, pungent.

t- slightly bitter with a fruity spice. great tasting overall, very mild but complex

m- solid drink with lower carbonation. medium bodied, similar to a flat soda.

d- easy to drink. although more of a summer beer, can be enjoyed year round. Great "starter" beer for a new to craft market drinker. (458 characters)

Pours a hazy dark golden yellow color with a two finger frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick lasting ring. Sporadic spots and streaks of lacing left behind.

Slightly earthy aroma with a good amount of zesty spice, alcohol, bready yeast and light/citrus fruit. Subtle barnyard presence with hints of grass and hay which is complimented nicely by spicy pepper, coriander and ginger. I don't know that I would have picked up ginger on my own but knowing that it's there makes it stand out. Faint alcohol presence along with a prominent fruit character in the nose. Hints of apple/pear but the citrus notes really stand out with some grapefruit and a strong orange rind presence.

Medium bodied with a slight dry, earthy funk character that's countered by the zesty spice and very sweet fruit flavor. Bready yeast adds some nice flavor and fullness to the palate. Spice is most prominent up front with some pepper, coriander and ginger. This is countered by a very sweet light fruit/citrus character. Hints of apple and pear with a very strong grapefruit and orange peel flavor. Slight dry finish.

Overall this beer s pretty flavorful and easy to drink but it's a touch too sweet for my liking. It could use some more earthy funk to balance things out a bit but I still enjoyed it. (1,293 characters)

A - Crystal clear pale amber body with foamy white head. Decent retention and nice lacing.

S - Lots of citrus

T - Incredibly dry. Citrus and floral hops. Not a whole lot of malt to speak of.

M - Light body with moderate/high carbonation. Somewhat thin and watery.

O - Good but fairly one note. Lack of body leads to seltzer-like mouthfeel. Not bad but not something I'll pick up again. (395 characters)
