A - Poured a cloudy, golden yellow color with a one-finger, white head of foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled yeasty and spicy with some grain-like aromas.

T - It had a nice spicy bite with some floral notes. Good grain and caramel flavors.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a nice sessionable saison.

On tap at Terasas.

Pours a cloudy straw yellow, nice creamy white head, little lace.

Grassy lemon zest nose, with yeasty malts.

Creamy sweet malts up front, spicy middle and slight dry finish. Good clean yeasts, clove and lemon and maybe a touch of banana

Good saison lighter and more refreshing and sessions better than most saisons.

Saison Diego 4.20% ABV textbook saison, dry phenolic tiny bit tart, tiny bit funky, low ABV, thirt quenching. Lacks head and pils flavor and could be fruitier, but much more accurate saison than most. Nice haze for a mersh beer. A bit more wheat too might have been good to smooth out hop flavor and Brett pepperiness. or is that seeds of paradise?

Slightly hazed beautiful golden billowing white head, right off the bat as the lacing settles I get citrus, spicy yeast, and a slight peppery hint. Diving right into flavor, spiced mild citric notes with a mild Belgian yeast chalky/spiced character. More citrus comes out with each sip, a bit of mellow West Coast hops in the back end help it out, very drinkable more fruit esters super enjoyable Summer Saison. Mouthfeel is smooth sturdy carbonation carries the body well, nothing becomes rough or stagnant on the palate between sips other than a touch of lingering Belgian yeast spiciness. Overall a solid summer beer that I will reach for especially when it's only 4.5% abv and available in the summer heat prior to a ball game.

Had this on tap at the Green Flash Brewery.

Look - light copper and clear. Looks more like a Pilsner than a saison.

Smell - yeasty, airy, and a little like PBR.

Taste - Light breadiness with some vanilla. A hint of straw and funk. Pretty flat and watered down as well. Honestly the beer tasted pretty bland and there was not a lot of positives to go on unfortunately. The (2) of us tasting it agreed the best take was PBR without the sharpness of an aluminum can.

Overall - The Rayon Vert (comparable to a Saison) is one of my favorite beers so with their actual Saison I was expecting something very dry & complex with bready funk. I was very disappointed with this beer because Green Flash is one of my favorite breweries and Saison is my favorite style. I only had it this once as a taster so maybe it was bottom of the keg and had gone flat. Or maybe this was supposed to be more of a 'starter' Saison marketed to the blue collar man's man. I will try this again in hopes that this time was an aberration and I was sorely mistaken.

On tap at The Linkery under the name of "Saison Diego" but is supposed to be identical to the Summer Saison. Tastes so much different (and better) than the cask version I had last year.

Warm, rich brew with a distinct Hefeweizen taste. A mellow buttery flavor before the brambly Belgian taste kicks in. Hops and yeasty bitterness make a nice counterpoint to the malty sweetness. Classic Saison flavor profile with a large dose of malt, yeasty funky flavors, and a modest bitter twang. Nice sudsy mouthfeel. Moderately tart with a dry, mineral aftertaste.

The label of the bottled version says it brewed with Seville orange peel, ginger, and grains of paradise.

On tap at Green Flash taproom 12/30/11.

Pours a golden hazy straw color with a thin head sitting on top. A punch of citrusy, musky yeast in the nose and not much else. Spice up front tickles the nose; lemon and orange zest flavors end in a funky spice and mild hop bitterness. Middling finish with a balanced feel makes this a very drinkable beer.

I love Saisons, but the thing I don't like is that there isn't much difference between them. Green Flash has actually succeeded in making a different tasting Saison. This is super light, despite being unfiltered. It's very light on everything in the beer, from the lemony zest to the barely there hop bitterness. Easily the most drinkable Saison. I just wish I had this during the 100 degree weather I experienced this summer. It's made for hot weather, but good any time.

On tap at Green Flash.

A: Transparent yellow gold with a big white head.

S: Pronounced pepper blends with grainy malt and a light bitterness. Esters remind me of granny smith apple and pear. Orange peel is evident, as are grains of paradise.

T: Pepper-like phenols with apple and pear. Low bitterness accompanies grain, orange pith, and earth. No alcohol is evident.

M: Light by with high carbonation.

Overall: A pleasant low alcohol Saison.

Served in an imperial pint. Slightly hazy bright yellow with a 2-finger white head, retention was decent, not much lace left.

Smell/taste - Smell is a bit faint, but not bad, reminds me of a hefeweizen. Taste is also very hefeweizen - huge banana especially, clove/spice, lemon, citrus, yeast and some bread. Not much of a hop presence.

Nice mouthfeel, good body for 4.5%, carbonation is at a good place, easy drinking.

I did enjoy this, but didn't really feel like a saison at all, so I knocked some points off.

Draught @ Capital Ale House: This one pours a hazy golden color. There was a small white head that slowly drifts away and leaves a good amount of lacing. It has a nice nose. Wheat, floral, earthy, light fruits, some spices. Interesting and good taste. Earthy, some spice, lemon, a touch tart. Very Nice!

On-tap at Green Flash

A: The beer pours a hazy golden straw with a thick white head that leaves good lacing.

S: Up front, nice spice notes to the aroma along with some bready malts. There is plenty of banana and a mild citrus rind note (mostly orange). Hints of white pepper, straw, and grass in the background.

T: The beer is lightly sweet with some notes of straw, citrus peel, and grass. Just a very light bitterness to it. Most of the flavor is in the form of bread and yeast, though there is a mild white pepper and coriander.

M: The body is medium and the carbonation is medium to high.

O: Nice and light, easy to drink. An appropriate beer for a warm July day in San Diego.

a surprising render of a unique note. did have a funk to it but somewhat of a french saison yeast note. golden cloudy with a retention. pour was a bit foamy. bubbles tight. grassy nose. palate is wheat and a mild pilsner hint of funk. finish is the most interesting of all. i got a distinct mustard seed. it seems to be spiced well. or the hopping has a unique twist... either way. creative. wonder if its hints of high AA bittering or secondary spicing though. either way... i'm trying it out on my next saison.

On Tap

Stone Brew Co.
Escondido, CA

Bright and clear golden. Little to no lacing down the glass.

Wonderfully aromatic beer. Floral, hoppy, spicy, and a tad funky. Very complete saison aroma, and this one seems particularly bright and aromatic.

Not quite as funky in flavor as I may have expected from the aroma, but still a decidedly good saison. Bright floral and hop elements combine for a wonderful drink, though it seems to drink much heavier than a 4.5% ABV beer. Seems far more substantial than the alcohol content would have me believe.

Medium bodied, but a touch heavy and thick in the mouth. I find myself drinking this one slowly.

A bright, floral, hoppy saison.

(had this on draught at the brewery in Vista). Pours golden with thick white head. Nice lacing. Aroma is grassy, hay, spices. Taste is semi-sweet with some dry bitterness. Light bodied with thin and oily texture. Finish is bitter. This was ok, but I could see having it when it warms up here in Arizona and I'm in the mood for a saison.

On tap at Max's.

Light straw yellow, dense white head, this is a great looking saison. Nose is excellent. Dry, spicy with white pepper clove and a little floral character, there's a rustic, grainy character. Fantastic! The palate opens, dry, grainy and a touch watery, though that's only because the beer's served too cold. Moderately spicy, the balance on the palate is great. I also detect a mild hibiscus note. Dry, grainy finish, spicy and cripsly carbonated, this is an excellent saison. Highly recommended.

On tap at the Green Flash tasting room on 7/10/09.

A - Hazy pale golden/straw-colored body with a light fluffy white head that settled into a patchy film and left lots of sticky, bubbly foam around the glass.

S - Spicy aroma with a mild funky presence suggesting hay, pepper and earthy notes. Some bitter herbal notes also emerged as the liquid warmed up.

T - Spicy flavor overall with pepper, clove and earthy bitter notes. There is also a touch of barnyard funk in the backend that suggests hay and earthy hops. Finishes with a slight herbal hop bite.

M - Light to medium bodied with a light syrupy texture that's a bit watery overall. Finishes with a touch of spice and bitterness on the palate.

D - Really nice saison that featured everything I enjoy about the style. I found this to be a very well-balanced brew with a bit of sweetness, subtle spices and a hint of funk, which resulted in a very flavorful, sessionable saison.

On tap at The Red in Santa Cruz. Opaque gold color with a billowing white head. Aroma is wheaty with some banana notes. Also some citrus, but a distinct lack of spiciness. Flavor is mainly banana pith and lemon meringue. Again, not really any spice. Comes off sweet and underattenuated. Good mouthfeel but this is really just a typically uninspired American attempt at a Belgian style.

Tap @ O'Brien's. Pours bright hazy gold with a pillowy white head. Good lacing. Fresh orange peel and coriander nose, with lots of spice and ginger. Yeasty big time. Taste was zesty, lots of orange and orange peel. Tangy peach/apricot bite, almost sour. Very tart and dry. Some have been saying Granny Smith, but to me it was more sour apricot candy with a bitter end. Very easy going down. Liked it.

I was able to try this last evening on tap, this is my first experience to find any Green Flash products on tap so this was a treat. The brew was poured to a nice golden yellow color with a medium sized head that left a sheet of foam on the top of the beer through out the whole experience. The aroma is nice, citrus fruit come to mind with some lemon and orange. Also there in the nose is a nice spicy that could be coming from the yeast and/or actual spices, regardless of how they are there they are a nice welcoming aroma. The flavors of this one seem at first to be light but as it warms a little and this session continues more and more flavors come to mind. Citrus flavors of lemon zest and orange is noticeable at first but the further I get into this one a nice spice flavor come out more and ore. Nice dryer finish, very smooth, somewhat velvety. This is a very good and easy drinking brew that I will look to see if they have in bottles as I see Olivers is now carrying some of there offerings.

Reviewed on 9/3/08. On tap at the Ginger Man. Pours a cloudy gold and wmall white head. Aroma of wheat, lots of spices. Flavor is wheaty with a spicy finish (pepper, clove). Somehow I had a feeling that this would taste a lot like the Southern Tier Cherry Saison and I was right. More wheat beer/hefe like than a saison, but it was tasty.

Stunning brew. Crisp, bright and session able. I have had this on tap at various San Diego pubs in 2008 and it has been consistently excellent. Superior example of the classic farmhouse ale with a light, clean finish and a touch of orange and spice. This was in decent circulation last spring and summer but resurfaced as a welcome surprise in the fall at the Linkery. Perfect kick off to an evening and pairs well with spicy sausage tacos.
