Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottled 05/06/13.

Appearance: Pours an oily midnight black with a lot of bubbles. Big three finger tan head with decent retention. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing around the glass.

Smell: A roasty and fairly robust dark aroma with good hints of chocolate and coffee. Upfront roasted barley malts with big hints of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee bean, burnt toast, oats, cookie dough, caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, nuts, smoke, and yeast. Also some hints of milk and cream. Sweet hints of molasses and brown sugar. Decent hop backing with earthy hints of grass and subtle pine. A pretty solid stout aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a roasty and fairly sweet stout taste with notes of chocolate and coffee roast. Dark roasted barley malts with upfront notes of cocoa, dark chocolate, coffee bean, oats, burnt toast, cookie dough, caramel, toffee, biscuit, grains, nuts, yeast, and slight smoke. Silky taste of milk and cream. Sweet notes of burnt brown sugar and molasses. Background notes of earthy and grassy hops along with some slight pine. Also a slight undertone of dark raisin. A pretty nice creamy stout taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Very creamy and silky with a smooth finish. Alcohol heat is masked well.

Overall: A pretty solid stout. Doesn't quite feel imperial but it has some good roasty and creamy flavors.

Pours a black brew with a medium beige head with regular retention, aroma is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with caramel, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol and coffee, medium to robust bodied, flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a bittersweet finish, and quite tasty. Fine body with a long and smooth aftertaste of light barley and coffee. So very nice.

Was curious so I tried this. Here goes:

A: Excellent. Pours a thick, creamy head with lots of lacing. Definitely more than one inch. Beer is opaque and lets no light through.

S: OK, but nothing special. Lots of dark fruit and the burnt malt makes its presence known. Kind of generic, really. No hops are detectable.

T: The burnt malt gives off the taste of a lot of dark fruit. Can taste plum, raisins, figs, etc. The dark fruit is really overwhelming in this beer. Also of note, there is a huge boozy presence in the background that coats the palate. The alcohol kind of overshadows the flavor profile of this beer, but the malt profile is good nonetheless.

M: Very rich and creamy. Glides down the throat.

O: A good beer. However, I've tasted stouts similar to it and was therefore bored with the flavor. Still good, however.

12oz bottle poured into a stout glass.

Pours midnight black with a thick, rich caramel/mocha head. Beautiful head, pretty good lacing.

Not too much of a smell. Some coffee and butter, as well as dark fruit.

Taste is very caramel and malt forward. Still the great coffee taste of a stout. Very balanced. Good stout.

Mouthfeel is rich and creamy. Very hearty but doesn't sit heavy. Nice combo.

Great beer.

A: Very black! Can't see a thing. Poured on the side so almost no head.

S: Not much here except some cracker and oat. Maybe some bitterness.

T: This is pleasant but not super complex as I'd hoped. Malt, toast, oat flakes, char, and tobacco. Got some pretty good flavors. Some of the booze comes through though.

M: Fairly thick but there's a lightness to it, so it's right in the middle. This is a very well-done piece of the beer.

O: Not bad. I may just not be in a stout mood tonight so I'll be as objective as I can be. This beer is pretty awesome. Not the most complex beer you'll ever have, but it is well made for the style. The only thing I didn't like was the booziness, but it wasn't overpowering.
